The number of research institutes in the field of mechanobiology in regenerative medicine is low in all participating regions, although the respective institutions work at the highest level. Only a cross-border merger of complementary research facilities, in which both the R&D infrastructure and its highly qualified employees are optimally used, will enable the solution of complex problems in regenerative medicine (heart, blood vessels, nerves, cartilage, bone). Therefore, the overarching objective of this project is the creation of the MechanoBiology Centre of Excellence in the hopes of exploiting existing synergies to increase performance, visibility and efficiency, and to significantly improve research activities and success through cross-border academic collaboration. Young scientists in the joint programmes contribute to the spread of knowledge far beyond the programme region. In this way, competence extends far beyond mere regional significance and impacts the European level and makes a significant contribution to the focus on interregional research in the programme area. The link to mechanobiology (effects of blood flow, cartilage and bone load, shock wave therapy) is new to this project and is a highly innovative field of regenerative medicine where therapeutic methods are developed to replace expensive long-term pharmacological therapies or multiple surgical procedures. The project pursues the strategy of supporting the body's self-healing powers to restore function-disrupted cells and tissues with relatively inexpensive methods, thus reducing the costs of therapy. The project contributes to the programme-specific goal of improving and expanding R&D capacity by fostering young emerging scientists in the scientific core arena of mechanobiology by developing and building joint academic programmes and promoting a cross-border exchange.
