DEMCON Macawi Respiratory Systems B.V.

Both Flanders and the Netherlands need more cost-efficient care. For example, the average bed occupancy in the border region is seven days after major surgical interventions, and therefore relatively long. One of the causes for this long-term bed occupancy has to do with the way in which this region uses ventilation: conventional ventilation leads to a decrease in muscle strength because the breathing of a patient is completely taken over by the ventilator. By developing better ventilators and ventilation strategies, bed occupancy in hospitals can be remarkably shortened. The increasing number of geriatric patients is also an important factor in the growth of the ventilator market. Patients with problems such as chronic respiratory disease or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) require long-term ventilation which increases the demand for medical ventilators and offers challenges for the development of new ventilation systems. A Flemish and a Dutch company, Medec and Macawi, join forces and together develop a prototype Intensive Care Unit (ICU) ventilator, which is fully operational after the project has ended. The model will be suitable for very young babies as well as adult patients. In addition, the device should be more user-friendly and safer to use, with a clear interface and adaptive possibilities based on physiological information that is measured real-time by the patient. Medec is responsible for the design of the concept and Macawi takes care of the ventilation module. Sound, energy consumption and heat generation of the ventilation module are carefully examined and optimized for the new functionalities that need to be introduced, such as improved control electronics. Information added on 2020-06-01, regarding the mitigation of the effects of COVID-19 (the coronavirus pandemic that started in 2019) (English language only): The intensive care units in The Netherlands currently have a great need for respirators. Demcon Macawi - project leader of InVentiVe - is a supplier of the heart of the breathing machine, the blower. Since the beginning of the corona crisis, the technology company from Twente has been working on its own device at the request of the Dutch government. The prototype is now ready. When the corona crisis broke out, the company was asked by its customers whether they could supply more. The Dutch government also took an interest in the devices, but asked whether it could build a whole ventilator instead of the core module. Since then the company has been working at breakneck speed to create a simplified model, including housing and software. This model is only suitable for the elderly who need the devices the most now. The company has been in the news lately as they can quickly overcome the shortage of respirators in the Netherlands. For example, De Volkskrant and NRC already told about this special deployment of Demcon. (English)
