EL SECUESTRO, EN CONTRASTE CON LA EXPORTACION, ES UN MECANISMO DE LA BOMBA BIOLOGICA EN EL OCEANO QUE OCURRE CUANDO EL CARBONO NO PUEDE VOLVER A LA ATMOSFERA EN AL MENOS 100 AÑOS, NORMALMENTE EL CARBONO TRANSPORTADO POR DEBAJO DE 1000 M DE PROFUNDIDAD. EL CARBONO ORGANICO PARTICULADO SE REMINERALIZA A SU PASO POR LA COLUMNA DE AGUA DEBIDO A LOS PROCARIOTAS Y LA FAUNA PELAGICA. UNA FRACCION DE ESTOS ANIMALES SON MIGRADORES VERTICALES QUE SE ALIMENTAN EN LA ZONA EPIPELAGICA DEL OCEANO Y LIBERAN CARBONO EN PROFUNDIDAD A TRAVES DE LA RESPIRACION, LA DEFECACION, LA EXCRECION, LA MUDA, EL CONSUMO DE LIPIDOS Y LA MORTALIDAD, SOSTENIENDO LA TRAMA TROFICA EN AGUAS PROFUNDAS. EL CONOCIMIENTO DE ESTE FLUJO EN LA CAPA MESOPELAGICA ESTA CRECIENDO EN LA ACTUALIDAD. SIN EMBARGO, EL PAPEL DE LA FAUNA PELAGICA COMO MECANISMO PARA TRANSPORTAR CARBONO HACIA LA ZONA BATIPELAGICA, LA CAPA DONDE SE PRODUCE EL VERDADERO SECUESTRO DE CARBONO ES EN GRAN PARTE DESCONOCIDA. EN ESTE PROYECTO NOS PROPONEMOS ESTUDIAR ESTE FLUJO BASANDONOS EN UNA REVISION PREVIA DE LA BIOMASA DEL ZOOPLANCTON EN LAS ZONAS EPI, MESO- Y BATIPELAGICAS, OBTENIDAS MEDIANTE REDES Y QUE MUESTRAN UNA RELACION CON LA PRODUCCION PRIMARIA, INDICANDO QUE EXISTE UN TRANSPORTE DE CARBONO HACIA LAS CAPAS MAS PROFUNDAS DEL OCEANO. EL SECUESTRO DE CARBONO EVALUADO SOLO MEDIANTE ESTIMAS CONSERVADORAS DE LA MORTALIDAD DEL ZOOPLANCTON EN LA CAPA 1000-2000 M FUE DEL ORDEN DE LAS ESTIMAS RECIENTES DEL FLUJO GRAVITACIONAL DE CARBONO. ESTE FLUJO POR PARTE DEL ZOOPLANCTON SE CORRELACIONO CON LAS ESTIMAS A GRAN ESCALA DE LA PRODUCCION PRIMARIA, LO QUE IMPLICA LA TRANSFERENCIA DE UNA FRACCION SIGNIFICATIVA DE LA PRODUCCION PRIMARIA DESDE LA ZONA EPIPELAGICA A LAS PROFUNDIDADES DEL OCEANO. ESTOS RESULTADOS APUNTAN A UN PAPEL CENTRAL DE LA FAUNA PELAGICA EN EL SECUESTRO DE CARBONO PUES, ADEMAS, AL FLUJO POR MORTALIDAD HAY QUE SUMAR LA RESPIRACION, LA DEFECACION, EL CONSUMO DE LIPIDOS Y EXCRECION POR EL ZOOPLANCTON Y MICRONECTON, ADEMAS DE INCLUIR LAS CAPAS MAS PROFUNDAS (>2000 M). EL OBJETIVO DE ESTE PROYECTO ES EVALUAR EL FLUJO DEL TRACTO DIGESTIVO, RESPIRATORIO, EXCRETOR Y LOS FLUJOS DE LIPIDOS POR DEBAJO DE LA TERMOCLINA PERMANENTE. LOS RESULTADOS PRELIMINARES PLANTEAN LA CUESTION DEL EFECTO QUE TIENE UN ENRIQUECIMIENTO EN LAS CAPAS SUPERIORES Y SU TRANSPORTE HACIA LA ZONA BATIPELAGICA, Y SI ESTAMOS O NO SUBESTIMANDO LA CAPTURA DE CARBONO POR PARTE DEL OCEANO. LA ESTIMA DEL FLUJO ACTIVO A TRAVES DE LA ZONA BATIPELAGICA CONJUNTAMENTE CON FLUJO PASIVO NOS PERMITIRA CONOCER, POR VEZ PRIMERA, LOS VALORES TOTALES DE SECUESTRO DE CARBONO EN EL OCEANO. (Spanish)

SEQUESTRATION, IN CONTRAST TO EXPORTATION, IS A BIOLOGICAL PUMP MECHANISM IN THE OCEAN THAT OCCURS WHEN CARBON CANNOT RETURN TO THE ATMOSPHERE FOR AT LEAST 100 YEARS, USUALLY CARBON TRANSPORTED BELOW 1000 M DEEP. PARTICULATE ORGANIC CARBON IS REMINERALISED AS IT PASSES THROUGH THE WATER COLUMN DUE TO PROKARYOTES AND PELAGIC FAUNA. A FRACTION OF THESE ANIMALS ARE VERTICAL MIGRATORS THAT FEED IN THE EPIPELAGIC AREA OF THE OCEANO AND RELEASE CARBON IN DEPTH THROUGH BREATHING, DEFECATION, EXCRETION, MUTE, LIPID CONSUMPTION AND MORTALITY, SUSTAINING THE TROPHIC WEFT IN DEEP WATERS. KNOWLEDGE OF THIS FLOW IN THE MESOPELAGICA LAYER IS GROWING TODAY. HOWEVER, THE ROLE OF PELAGIC FAUNA AS A MECHANISM FOR TRANSPORTING CARBON TO THE BATIPELAGICA ZONE, THE LAYER WHERE TRUE CARBON SEQUESTRATION OCCURS IS LARGELY UNKNOWN. IN THIS PROJECT WE INTEND TO STUDY THIS FLOW BASED ON A PREVIOUS REVIEW OF THE BIOMASS OF ZOOPLANKTON IN THE ZONES EPI, MESO- AND BATIPELAGICAS, OBTAINED THROUGH NETWORKS AND THAT SHOW A RELATIONSHIP WITH PRIMARY PRODUCTION, INDICATING THAT THERE IS A TRANSPORT OF CARBON TO THE DEEPEST LAYERS OF THE OCEAN. CARBON SEQUESTRATION EVALUATED ONLY BY CONSERVATIVE ESTIMATES OF ZOOPLANKTON MORTALITY IN THE 1000-2000 M LAYER WAS IN THE ORDER OF RECENT ESTIMATES OF GRAVITATIONAL CARBON FLOW. THIS FLOW BY THE ZOOPLANKTON CORRELATES WITH THE LARGE-SCALE ESTIMATES OF PRIMARY PRODUCTION, WHICH IMPLIES THE TRANSFER OF A SIGNIFICANT FRACTION OF THE PRIMARY PRODUCTION FROM THE EPIPELAGIC ZONE TO THE DEPTHS OF THE OCEAN. THESE RESULTS POINT TO A CENTRAL ROLE OF PELAGIC FAUNA IN CARBON SEQUESTRATION BECAUSE, IN ADDITION, MORTALITY FLOW MUST BE ADDED TO BREATHING, DEFECATION, LIPID CONSUMPTION AND EXCRETION BY ZOOPLANKTON AND MICRONECTON, IN ADDITION TO INCLUDING THE DEEPEST LAYERS (>2000 M). THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO EVALUATE THE FLOW OF THE DIGESTIVE, RESPIRATORY, EXCRETOR AND LIPID FLOWS BELOW THE PERMANENT THERMOCLINE. THE PRELIMINARY RESULTS RAISE THE QUESTION OF THE EFFECT OF ENRICHMENT ON THE UPPER LAYERS AND THEIR TRANSPORT TO THE BATIPELAGICA ZONE, AND WHETHER OR NOT WE ARE UNDERESTIMATING THE OCEAN’S CARBON SEQUESTRATION. THE ESTIMATION OF THE ACTIVE FLOW THROUGH THE BATIPELAGICA ZONE TOGETHER WITH PASSIVE FLOW WILL ALLOW US TO KNOW, FOR THE FIRST TIME, THE TOTAL VALUES OF CARBON SEQUESTRATION IN THE OCEAN. (English)
