EN LOS ULTIMOS TIEMPOS EXISTE UNA CIERTA PREOCUPACION ACERCA DEL USO DE MATERIALES DE ENVASE NO BIODEGRADABLES POR EL AGOTAMIENTO DE LOS RECURSOS NATURALES Y OTROS PROBLEMAS MEDIOAMBIENTALES COMO LA GESTION DE LOS RESIDUOS GENERADOS. POR ELLO HAY UNA DEMANDA CRECIENTE DE MATERIALES DE ENVASE BIODEGRADABLE (BIOPOLIMEROS) OBTENIDOS DE FUENTES RENOVABLES COMO UNA ALTERNATIVA A LOS PLASTICOS CONVENCIONALES, ESPECIALMENTE PARA APLICACIONES DESECHABLES O ENVASES CON POCO TIEMPO DE VIDA. SIN EMBARGO, LOS BIOPLASTICOS SON ACTUALMENTE MAS CAROS Y TIENEN UN PEOR RENDIMIENTO, ESPECIALMENTE EN LO QUE CONCIERNE A SUS PROPIEDADES BARRERA. UNA OPCION ES CREAR NANOCOMPOSITES PARA MEJORAR LAS PROPIEDADES BARRERA Y CREAR MATERIALES ACTIVOS QUE LE CONFIERAN UN VALOR AÑADIDO PARA COMPENSAR SU COSTE MAS ELEVADO. EN EL PRESENTE PROYECTO SE PRETENDE DESARROLLAR UN NUEVO MATERIAL BIODEGRADABLE CON PROPIEDADES ACTIVAS (ANTIOXIDANTES Y/O DE ABSORCION DE ETILENO) PARA SU UTILIZACION EN ENVASE ALIMENTARIO, OBTENIDO A PARTIR DE FUENTES RENOVABLES Y EN GRAN PARTE DERIVADO DE SUBPRODUCTOS, HACIENDOLO ASI MAS SOSTENIBLE. LA ESTRUCTURA DEL MATERIAL DE ENVASE ESTARA HECHA DE PHA COMERCIAL. SE AÑADIRA POR ELECTROESTIRADO UNA CAPA CONTENIENDO NANOCELULOSA BACTERIANA, OBTENIDA A PARTIR DE SUBPRODUCTOS, PARA MEJORAR SUS PROPIEDADES BARRERA Y SER USADA TAMBIEN COMO CARRIER DE LAS FUNCIONES ACTIVAS PROMOVIDAS POR NANOPARTICULAS DE PD Y CERIA, ABSORBEDORES DE OXIGENO, DE RADICALES LIBRES Y DE ETILENO. SE ESTUDIARAN LAS PROPIEDADES MECANICAS, TERMICAS, BARRERA Y LA CAPACIDAD DE ABSORBER OXIGENO, RADICALES LIBRES Y ETILENO DE LOS DISTINTOS MATERIALES OBTENIDOS. ADEMAS SE LLEVARA A CABO UN ANALISIS DE LA SEGURIDAD ALIMENTARIA DE LOS MATERIALES REALIZANDO ESTUDIOS DE MIGRACION GLOBAL Y ESPECIFICA DE ACUERDO CON LA NORMATIVA EUROPEA. (Spanish)

IN RECENT TIMES THERE IS SOME CONCERN ABOUT THE USE OF NON-BIODEGRADABLE PACKAGING MATERIALS DUE TO THE DEPLETION OF NATURAL RESOURCES AND OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS SUCH AS THE MANAGEMENT OF WASTE GENERATED. THEREFORE, THERE IS AN INCREASING DEMAND FOR BIODEGRADABLE PACKAGING MATERIALS (BIOPOLIMEROS) PRODUCED FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO CONVENTIONAL PLASTICS, ESPECIALLY FOR DISPOSABLE APPLICATIONS OR SHORT-LIVED PACKAGING. HOWEVER, BIOPLASTICS ARE CURRENTLY MORE EXPENSIVE AND PERFORM WORSE, ESPECIALLY AS REGARDS THEIR BARRIER PROPERTIES. ONE OPTION IS TO CREATE NANOCOMPOSITES TO IMPROVE BARRIER PROPERTIES AND CREATE ACTIVE MATERIALS THAT GIVE YOU ADDED VALUE TO OFFSET ITS HIGHER COST. THIS PROJECT AIMS TO DEVELOP A NEW BIODEGRADABLE MATERIAL WITH ACTIVE PROPERTIES (ANTIOXIDANTS AND/OR ETHYLENE ABSORPTION) FOR USE IN FOOD PACKAGING, OBTAINED FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES AND LARGELY DERIVED FROM BY-PRODUCTS, THUS MAKING IT MORE SUSTAINABLE. THE STRUCTURE OF THE PACKAGING MATERIAL WILL BE MADE OF COMMERCIAL PHA. A LAYER CONTAINING BACTERIAL NANOCELLULOSE, OBTAINED FROM BY-PRODUCTS, WILL BE ADDED BY ELECTROESTIRATE TO IMPROVE ITS BARRIER PROPERTIES AND ALSO BE USED AS CARRIER OF THE ACTIVE FUNCTIONS PROMOTED BY PD AND CERIA NANOPARTICULATES, OXYGEN ABSORBERS, FREE RADICALS AND ETHYLENE. THE MECHANICAL, THERMAL, BARRIER AND CAPACITY TO ABSORB OXYGEN, FREE RADICALS AND ETHYLENE OF THE DIFFERENT MATERIALS OBTAINED WILL BE STUDIED. IN ADDITION, AN ANALYSIS OF THE FOOD SAFETY OF MATERIALS WILL BE CARRIED OUT BY CARRYING OUT GLOBAL MIGRATION STUDIES AND SPECIFIED IN ACCORDANCE WITH EUROPEAN REGULATIONS. (English)
