    The cross-border territory is particularly prone to flooding due to its geological characteristics, aggravated by other stakeholders such as global warming, changes in agricultural practices or the development of urban areas. The territories are joining forces to manage this increasingly recurrent problem and thus protect the exposed populations and properties in the area of the cross-border Lys basin. LINBATYS is a coordinated cross-border action plan to better manage surface waters on small tributaries of the Lys catchment area. The project also proposes a series of hydraulic installations that have a further ecological added value (installations favourable to the development of biodiversity and the preservation of groundwater). The works allow for the temporary storage of rainwater, the increase in the storage capacity of rivers on the Lys plain and existing basins, the limitation of flow velocities, the control of erosion problems and mudflows and improved water drainage. Because water does not stop at the border and because the way water is managed on one side inevitably impacts the neighbouring side(s), the cross-border approach is essential to adapt the hydraulic capacities on the Lys river basin through concerted management and thus improve the situation on the 3 sides of the project area. Local residents and stakeholders are made aware of the dangers associated with flooding. (English)
