The Celtic Advanced Life Science Innovation Network (CALIN) is a 4 year Ireland-Wales INTERREG project which supports research and development programmes for small and medium-sized businesses in the life science sector. CALIN will strengthen economic links and stimulate cross-border collaboration to support both economic and scientific life science development in Ireland and Wales. This will be achieved by connecting businesses with the Welsh and Irish academic knowledge base including six higher education institutes: Swansea University (Lead), Bangor University, Cardiff University, University College Dublin, Tyndall National Institute-Cork, National University of Ireland Galway. Specifically CALIN will increase knowledge sharing between centres of excellence in higher education and small and medium sized enterprises, supporting new technologies, products and services such as nanotechnology, a key enabling technology. The project links research and development, innovation, commercial development and provision of high value jobs. CALINs smart specialisation approach will create a platform for industry driven innovation to strengthen the life science sector, which will in turn generate wealth and prosperity in the regions.
