The Education Act states that the work in the preschool should be carried out by educated/qualified Preschool Teachers (SFS 2010:800, chapter 2, §13). In addition, childcare workers, i.e staff with relevant training and/or experience may also work in the preschool as long as they can support children’s development and learning and work towards reaching the goals in the curriculum (Skolverket 2016a). In all of Sweden lack of educated Preschool Teachers and Childcare Workers has resulted in an increase of uneducated staff in the preschools. In the Gothenburg Region approximately 1000 of the regions 4000 Childcare Workers lack the upper secondary vocational education specialising in pedagogical work needed to be a qualified Childcare Worker (according to a survey carried out by the Gothenburg Region in 2018). Such a high number of uneducated staff causes concern when it comes to quality in the preschool as well as concern for stress when the high demands in the curriculum meets the low level of education of many employees. Sick leave due to mental illness caused by stress is common among the preschool staff. In addition Preschool Teachers as well as Childcare Workers carry out chores that someone with a lower level of education could carry out. Knowing this the project aims to educate uneducated Child Workers as well as educate staff to the new position called Preschool Assistant. The education of “uneducated" personnel (i.e. personnel lacking education towards working with children) in the preschools is expected to result in higher self-esteem in their profession, better working environment as they have the qualifications needed for their work, better division of labour as a result of the educated Preschool Assistants, career paths made clearer (as Preschool Assistants can educate themselves to Childcare Workers) and educated staff being a better support for their colleagues. In sum the project is expected to contribute to more sustainable working conditions in the preschools which in the long run could decrease sick-leave due to stress and increased opportunities for the employees to be willing to stay working in the preschool. In addition the project is expected to contribute to make the preschool as a working place as a whole and the targeted professions in particular more attractive. This could lead to new and a wider range of persons attracted to work in the preschool. (Swedish)
