NEXT (NEUTRINO EXPERIMENT WITH A XENON TPC) ES UN EXPERIMENTO PARA BUSCAR DESINTEGRACIONES DOBLE BETA SIN NEUTRINOS (BBONU) CUYA DETECCION DEMOSTRARIA UNIVOCAMENTE QUE EL NEUTRINO ES UNA PARTICULA DE MAJORANA (ES DECIR SU PROPIA ANTIPARTICULA) Y SUPONDRIA UN DESCUBRIMIENTO CON PROFUNDAS CONSECUENCIAS EN FISICA DE PARTICULAS Y COSMOLOGIA. _x000D_ _x000D_ EL ISOTOPO ESCOGIDO POR NEXT ES EL XE-136. EL EXPERIMENTO DISPONE DE CIEN KILOS DE GAS XENON ENRIQUECIDO AL 90% EN XE-136. LA TECNOLOGIA SE BASA EN EL USO DE CAMARAS DE PROYECCION TEMPORAL OPERANDO A UNA PRESION TIPICA DE 15 ATMOSFERAS (HPXE). LAS CARACTERISTICAS PRINCIPALES DE ESTA TECNICA EXPERIMENTAL SON: A) EXCELENTE RESOLUCION EN LA MEDIDA DE LA ENERGIA; B) CAPACIDAD DE RECONSTRUIR LA TRAYECTORIA DE LOS ELECTRONES EMITIDOS EN LA DESINTEGRACION, LO QUE REFUERZA LA CAPACIDAD DEL EXPERIMENTO PARA REDUCIR EL RUIDO DE FONDO; C) ESCALABILIDAD A GRANDES MASA Y D) LA POSIBILIDAD DE REDUCIR EL RUIDO DE FONDO HASTA NIVELES DESPRECIABLES MEDIANTE LA TECNICA CONOCIDA COMO BATA (DE LAS SIGLAS EN INGLES, BARIUM TAGGING)._x000D_ _x000D_ EL EXPERIMENTO NEXT CONTEMPLA CUATRO FASES: I) DEMOSTRACION DE LA TECNOLOGIA HPXE CON PROTOTIPOS QUE USAN 1 KG DE XENON NATURAL; II) MEDIDA DE LOS RUIDOS DE FONDO Y DE LA SEÑAL DEL PROCESO PERMITIDO (BB2NU) CON UN DETECTOR (NEW) BASADO EN 12 KILOS DE XENON ENRIQUECIDO Y OPERANDO EN EL LABORATORIO SUBTERRANEO DE CANFRANC (LSC); III) BUSQUEDA DE DESINTEGRACIONES BB0NU CON EL DETECTOR NEXT-100, UNA REPLICA A ESCALA 2:1 (EN TAMAÑO) Y 8:1 (EN MASA) DE NEW, QUE USARA POR TANTO 100 KILOS DE GAS ENRIQUECIDO; IV) BUSQUEDA DE DESINTEGRACIONES BBONU CON EL DETECTOR BEXT (BARIUM-TAGGING EXPERIMENT WITH A XENON TPC), CON UNA MASA DE ALREDEDOR DE UNA TONELADA DE XE-136, QUE INTRODUCIRA LA TECNICA DE BATA PARA REDUCIR EL RUIDO DE FONDO HASTA NIVELES DESPRECIABLES. _x000D_ _x000D_ LA PRIMERA FASE DE NEXT HA SIDO COMPLETADA CON EXITO DURANTE EL PERIODO 2009-2013. DURANTE ESTA ETAPA SE HAN CONSTRUIDO LOS PROTOTIPOS NEXT-DEMO (IFIC) Y NEXT-DBDM (BERKELEY) QUE HAN DEMOSTRADO LAS CARACTERISTICAS PRINCIPALES DE LA TECNOLOGIA. EL EXPERIMENTO SE ENCUENTRA EN ESTOS MOMENTOS EN SU SEGUNDA FASE. EL DETECTOR NEW ESTA SIENDO CONSTRUIDO POR LA COLABORACION Y OPERARA EN EL LSC DURANTE EL AÑO 2015. LA FINANCIACION DEL DETECTOR NEW PROVIENE DE UN ADVANCED GRANT (ADG/ERC) CONCEDIDO EN 2013 AL IP DE ESTE PROYECTO (OPERATIVO DESDE FEBRERO DE 2014 A FEBRERO DE 2018). EL DETECTOR NEXT-100 SUPONE LA TERCERA FASE DEL PROYECTO. SE CONSTRUIRA Y PONDRA A PUNTO DURANTE 2016 Y 2017 E INICIARA SU TOMA DE DATOS EN 2018. LA CUARTA FASE DEPENDE DE LOS RESULTADOS DE LA FASE TRES, EN LA QUE SE PODRIA REALIZAR YA UN DESCUBRIMIENTO. PREVISIBLEMENTE, BEXT PODRIA FUNCIONAR EN EL LSC A PARTIR DEL 2020. _x000D_ _x000D_ NEXT ES UNA COLABORACION INTERNACIONAL, LIDERADA POR GRUPOS ESPAÑOLES Y CON UNA FUERTE CONTRIBUCION DE GRUPOS NORTEAMERICANOS. EL DESARROLLO DE LA TECNOLOGIA LASER NECESARIA PARA EL BATA SE REALIZA EN COLABORACION CON EL CENTRO DE LASERES PULSADOS DE SALAMANCA (CLPU). _x000D_ _x000D_ ESTE PROYECTO DE INVESTIGACION REQUIERE COFINANCIACION PARA DESARROLLAR LA FASE TRES DEL EXPERIMENTO. CONCRETAMENTE, SE REQUIERE: A) FONDOS PARA ADQUIRIR UNA PARTE DE LOS EQUIPOS Y MATERIAL FUNGIBLE NECESARIOS PARA LA CONSTRUCCION DEL DETECTOR NEXT-100 (COFINANCIADO POR EL ADG Y LOS FONDOS PROVENIENTES DE LA COLABORACION); B) FONDOS PARA UNA PARTE DEL PERSONAL CIENTIFICO Y TECNICO; Y C) FONDOS PARA COFINANCIAR EL I+D DEDICADO AL BATA. NEXT (NEUTRINO EXPERIMENT WITH A XENON TPC) IS AN EXPERIMENT TO LOOK FOR DOUBLE BETA DISINTEGRATIONS WITHOUT NEUTRINOS (BBONU) WHOSE DETECTION WOULD UNIQUELY DEMONSTRATE THAT NEUTRINO IS A PARTICLE OF MAJORANA (I.E. ITS OWN ANTIPARTICULA) AND WOULD BE A DISCOVERY WITH PROFOUND CONSEQUENCES IN PHYSICS OF PARTICLES AND COSMOLOGIA. _x000D_ _x000D_ the isotope SCOGITED BY NEXT IS THE XE-136. THE EXPERIMENT HAS ONE HUNDRED KILOS OF XENON GAS ENRICHED AT 90 % IN XE-136. TECHNOLOGY IS BASED ON THE USE OF TEMPORARY PROJECTION CAMERAS OPERATING AT A TYPICAL PRESSURE OF 15 ATMOSPHERES (HPXE). THE MAIN FEATURES OF THIS EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE ARE: EXCELLENT RESOLUTION TO THE EXTENT OF ENERGY; ABILITY TO RECONSTRUCT THE TRAJECTORY OF ELECTRONS EMITTED IN DISINTEGRATION, WHICH STRENGTHENS THE ABILITY OF THE EXPERIMENT TO REDUCE BACKGROUND NOISE; C) SALABILITY TO GREAT MASA AND D) THE POSSIBILITY OF REDUCTION OF FUND’S BUSINESS LEVELS BY THE TECHNICAL COUNCIL AS WORLD (from the SIGLAS IN ENGLISH, BARIUM tagging)._x000D_ _x000D_ THE NEXT EXPERIMENT CONTEMPLA FOUR FASES: DEMONSTRATION OF HPXE TECHNOLOGY WITH PROTOTYPES USING 1 KG OF NATURAL XENON; MEASUREMENT OF BACKGROUND NOISE AND PERMITTED PROCESS SIGNAL (BB2NU) WITH A DETECTOR (NEW) BASED ON 12 KILOS OF ENRICHED XENON AND OPERATING IN THE CANFRANC UNDERGROUND LABORATORY (LSC); SEARCH FOR BB0NU DISINTEGRATIONS WITH THE NEXT-100 DETECTOR, A 2:1 SCALE REPLICA (IN SIZE) AND 8:1 (BY MASS) OF NEW, THUS USING 100 KILOS OF ENRICHED GAS; SEARCH FOR BBONU DISINTEGRATIONS WITH THE BEXT DETECTOR (BARIUM-TAGGING EXPERIMENT WITH A XENON TPC), WITH A MASS OF ABOUT ONE TON OF XE-136, WHICH WILL INTRODUCE THE GOWN TECHNIQUE TO REDUCE BACKGROUND NOISE TO NEGLIGIBLE LEVELS. _x000D_ _x000D_ the FIRST NEXT Phase has been COMPLETED WITH DURING EXIT FOR THE 2009-2013 period. DURING THIS STAGE, NEXT-DEMO PROTOTYPES (IFIC) AND NEXT-DBDM (BERKELEY) HAVE BEEN BUILT THAT HAVE DEMONSTRATED THE MAIN FEATURES OF TECHNOLOGY. THE EXPERIMENT IS CURRENTLY IN ITS SECOND PHASE. THE NEW DETECTOR IS BEING BUILT BY THE COLLABORATION AND WILL OPERATE IN THE LSC DURING 2015. THE FINANCING OF THE NEW DETECTOR COMES FROM AN ADVANCED GRANT (ADG/ERC) GRANTED IN 2013 TO THE IP OF THIS PROJECT (OPERATIONAL FROM FEBRUARY 2014 TO FEBRUARY 2018). THE NEXT-100 DETECTOR IS THE THIRD PHASE OF THE PROJECT. IT WILL BE BUILT AND UPGRADED DURING 2016 AND 2017 AND WILL START ITS DATA COLLECTION IN 2018. THE FOURTH PHASE DEPENDS ON THE RESULTS OF PHASE THREE, IN WHICH A DISCOVERY COULD ALREADY BE MADE. BEXT IS EXPECTED TO OPERATE ON THE LSC FROM 2020. _x000D_ _x000D_ Next IS an INTERNATIONAL COLABORATION, led by Spanish groups and with a strong NORTHEAMERICAN GROUPS CONTRIBUTION. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE LASER TECHNOLOGY NEEDED FOR THE GOWN IS CARRIED OUT IN COLLABORATION WITH THE PULSATED LASERS CENTER OF SALAMANCA (CLPU). _x000D_ _x000D_ this RESEARCH PROJECT REQUIRED COFINANCATION TO DEVELOP THREE PASS OF EXPERIMENT. SPECIFICALLY, IT IS REQUIRED TO: FUNDS FOR THE ACQUISITION OF PART OF THE EQUIPMENT AND CONSUMABLES REQUIRED FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEXT-100 DETECTOR (CO-FINANCED BY ADG AND FUNDS FROM THE COLLABORATION); FUNDS FOR PART OF THE SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL STAFF; AND C) FUNDS TO CO-FINANCE R & D DEDICATED TO THE GOWN.
