Motivated by the urge to understand the impacts of climate change on the fragile polar and mountain environments, the BC3 has recently built a state-of-the-art cold room, designed to be a microscopy laboratory dedicated to low-temperature science and technology (down to -30 °C). Named IzotzaLab (izotz = ice in Basque), this laboratory is configured to focus on a motorized, high-performance optical microscope, giving rise to a fully automated system, which is the equipment requested in this proposal. The requested microscope will be the only one of its kind in the world, operating at -30 °C, fully computer-controlled to perform 2D and 3D scanning of large samples (up to 6 × 3 in) with maximum resolution, and suitable to be simultaneously coupled to a deep-UV Raman device and a LIBS system (laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy), both specially designed for this microscope. Several projects on the regional, national, European and international levels (e.g. MENDIKLIM, ISEE, CUGLAC, iMechPro, PaleoICE, CORaHE, EastGRIP, GIGAKU-TGU, etc.) may benefit from this automated microscopy system, which will boost the IzotzaLab to become a worldwide reference in optical microscopy at low temperatures, for the physical and chemical analysis of geological and biological samples, as well as technological materials and systems.
