The project aims to develop tourist capacities of the Ludaš Lake and incorporate the local community into tourist sector to make this location more attractive on the eco- and ethno-tourism map and make it suitable for the cross-border cooperation with Hungarian tourist centres (in Mórahalom). Furthermore, the project intends to document the traditional use of plants among the local population and educate the locals on how to implement green technology in production of plant-based souvenirs, as well as how to preserve the environment. The project’s target groups are: the local community members, small independent entrepreneurs and tourism sector employees operating in the project’s target area. Furthermore, the project will include the underprivileged groups, including orphans, people with disabilities, elderly people, single parents, unemployed, and displaced persons, and train them in the production of certain natural plant-based products, such as "Green cosmetics" and “Green gastronomy”, for which there is a great interest on the EU market. This will provide them with the means to subsidize their incomes and decrease their dependence on others, thus contributing to their general wellbeing. This project will also contribute the economy of the border region – every aspect of the economy, from the local merchants, tourist agencies to other service providers will benefit from the increased trade. The first stage of the project will include the 3D mapping of the terrain of the Special nature reserve “Ludaš Lake” and parts of the landscape of “Subotička peščara” and the Special nature reserve “Selevenjske pustare”. The project will map out the nature tracks, alongside “anti-stress” gardens and air spas. Additionally, in this stage of the project the capacities of the Ludaš Lake Visitor centre will be upgraded to suit the needs of the later stages of the project. Along these activities, the project team will create a comprehensive ethno-botanical questionnaire circulate it among the local population. This will provide them with information about the cultural heritage and traditional uses of the local flora. Thanks to the information gathered via this questionnaire and the existing literature about safety testing about the plants for traditional use the project will base workshops on this data about combining the knowledge of modern medicine and the traditional and culturally unique practices of the population in the Programme area. The project’s workshops will be tailored for all members of the local community and give them the necessary skills to use the traditional plants to create unique souvenirs, health and food products. Through the new health tracks, anti-stress gardens, air spas and the small botanical garden with the most important medical plants used in the border region, and the souvenirs, the project will greatly increase the tourism profile of the area, and allow the local population to exploit the growing trend of health tourism, while working to preserve their cultural heritage. In order to ensure the sustainability and with respect to the EC open science policies all of the findings of the project will be organized into a comprehensive tri-lingual online monograph.
