The Shared Waters Enhancement & Loughs Legacy (SWELL) project represents a cross-border partnership comprising NI Water, Irish Water, Agri-Food & Biosciences Institute, Loughs Agency and East Border Region, working collaboratively to improve water quality within the shared waters of Carlingford Lough and Lough Foyle. The partnership will utilise best practice and tap into their individual areas of expertise to effectively achieve the outputs and results. Through strategic catchment investigation and modelling, SWELL will deliver optimised, sustainable capital upgrades to wastewater assets with added value through innovation and knowledge sharing to the benefit of the entire region. Compliance with the Water Framework Directive requires an integrated approach to the sustainable management and protection of water resources across multiple sectors and national boundaries. SWELL adopts a cross border management approach to ensure maximum environmental benefit and provision of the necessary water quality improvements within the shared waters. The SWELL Project builds on the work carried out by the Regulating Authorities in both jurisdictions, by developing ecosystem models to simulate various sources of pollution and their impact on water quality. This unique modelling approach will facilitate validation of optimised solutions to meet the required programme outputs and results indicators. The project execution strategy is currently well defined and has been split up into four key stages, each with component work packages that are all intrinsically linked to deliver the project outcomes. The project stages are as follows: • Catchment Investigation. • Ecosystem Modelling. • Capital Delivery (outputs). • Project Closure & Legacy. (English)
