The project is the continuation of many years of cooperation and joint activities of the official institutions of Slovenia and Austria in the field of water management, which operate under the bilateral commission for boundary waters. With the implementation of the project the border Mura river will be visibly transformed into a river that connects. The work packages of the project include harmonized measures for the improvement of water management and flood protection - on a strategic level by developing a cross-border management plan of the border Mura river until 2030 and on local level with the implementation of flood protection measures. These measures will be supported by a targeted publicity and information campaign. The aim is to strive to improve the living environment and life situation of people living next to and on the river and thereby promoting joint life of neighbours on both sides of the Mura river. The common challenge, considering the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) and Floods Directive (2007/60/EC), is to improve the hydro-morphological situation of the border Mura river with the aim to achieve good status, to optimize the management of flood risks and to raise the awareness of the local population on flood risks. The goal of the joint strategic considerations is to evaluate the principle water management concept from 2000, as well as to evaluate implemented measures, which will be the foundation for the preparation of the cross-border management plan until 2030. The national and regional decision-making levels are directly adressed through the inclusion of departments responsible for water management in the project partnership. At the local level it directly benefits the local population. Crossborder cooperation is vital for the sustainable development and utilization of resources of the border Mura (also as an ecosystem).
