Tourism is the most important economic activity in the joint cross-border area of Greece-Cyprus and therefore has a very significant positive impact on the local economies of the Prefecture of Chania and the Province of Paphos. Every year the above two spatial units attract hundreds of thousands of locals and foreign visitors, with 90% of them concentrating uncontrollably in the coastal areas, due to the existence of a very large number of coastal areas of special natural beauty. This already has a negative impact on local natural resources, resulting in the degradation and corresponding reduction of the attractiveness of these coastal areas, many of which include sub-areas included in the Natura 2000 network, such as the Balos Lagoon in the Prefecture of Chania. and the Akama Peninsula in Paphos District. At the same time, the biodiversity of these areas is seriously endangered. The development of sustainable forms of coastal tourism is a common challenge for national and regional strategies in the joint Greece-Cyprus Cross-Border Area, and therefore requires cross-border cooperation from both countries to address through their networking and collaboration. The main goal of the proposed project is the establishment of a Network for the Promotion of Sustainable Forms of Coastal Tourism, which will introduce for the first time in the common cross-border area innovative policies of sustainable tourism management of coastal areas. These policies will be designed with the active participation of stakeholders, through the establishment and operation of model Communities for the Protection and Promotion of Coastal Ecosystems, but also with the support of the most modern models for measuring bearing capacity. The main outputs of the project are: - Development of a model model and indicators for measuring tourist capacity in sensitive coastal areas, based on the bearing capacity model, - Preparation of Local Management Plans for Sustainable Tourism Development in the 2 aforementioned areas, - Design of sustainable tourist routes / packages, - Creation of 2 Observatories / Information Centers in order to monitor the sustainable tourism capacity indicators of the 2 areas and to provide relevant information, - Construction of 1 e-networking / promotion platform for the purpose of information on sustainable forms of tourism - networking between stakeholders, but also the promotion of tourist packages / routes, - Organization of 2 major events promoting the new alternative tourist destinations in Crete and Cyprus. Finally, the main beneficiaries of the project are: a) the competent Local & Regional public Authorities and Bodies of Management of Protected Areas, b) the relevant departments of the Universities, c) Chambers and other socio-economic bodies of the above areas, and d) Bodies of society the citizens.
