The rapid development of distributed energy systems (DES), including fast increasing number of the renewable energy sources demand the change of classical grid into new smart grids integrating all distributed elements eg. loads/sources/energy storages. Used for this purpose conventional transformers are capable only to adjust the voltage level. Due to the nature of extremely different types of energy sources, loads and frequent voltage disturbances occurring in DES new solution is demanded. The proposed solution is the application of multifunctional power electronics Smart Transformer (ST), that is able to not only meet current requirements of DES integration, but also respond to the future challenges, defined by the constant progress of an electricity consumption in all fields of life. The aim of this project is to develop an innovate technology of highly efficient and fault tolerant SiC-based ST, including design and control of ST with optimal energy flow management of its units.
