The Finnish labour market is among the most differentiated in the EU. The segregation of women’s and men’s occupations is horizontally manifested in women’s orientation to education and care, men’s technology and logistics. Within different sectors, gender inequality can be seen vertically in the position of women and men in different jobs, wage inequality and diverging career development. Gender equality requires the identification and recognition of segregation-related phenomena and the opening-up of attitudes. The main objective of this project is to promote and support women’s quantitatively and qualitatively equal transition to work and career progression. The main focus will be on the development of vertical equality. The project will focus in particular on the field of technology, including business, security and risk management. This objective will be pursued through four sets of measures: 1) to produce and disseminate researched data on the realisation of equality and equality 2) to develop gender-responsive career guidance and forms of cooperation in working life during studies for the benefit of female students, and to work on gender equality in higher education; 3) to support career paths and entrepreneurship of higher education women together with the representatives of the world of work; and 4) to improve the understanding of equality structures and unconscious bias among employees in higher education and enterprises. The measures will result in 1) timely information on the causes and consequences of gender bias, in particular in the field of technology, 2) guidance practices that reduce in particular vertical segregation; career and working life services as well as tools and recommendations for university gender equality; (3) effective and permanent forms of cooperation between women students and employers; (4) approaches that increase organisations’ understanding of unintentional discrimination and help to systematically develop diversity and equality in working communities. The main target groups of the project are female university students and graduates in the target fields, teaching and guidance staff of higher education institutions, as well as employers and their staff involved in the project. Impact assessment, good communication and cooperation with established networks and actors ensures the dissemination of results during the project period and consolidation after the project period. The project will create a permanent culture in higher education and working life that enables discussion of structural inequalities and the related problems. The project is coordinated by Tampere University of Applied Sciences TAMK and implemented by three universities (Aalto, LUT and Tampere), five universities of applied sciences (TAMK, Haaga-Helia, JAMK, OAMK and Laurea) and the trade union Technology Academics TEK. Päähuomio on vertikaalisen tasa-arvon kehittämisessä.
