The objective of the study is to investigate, based on research data, the driving behaviour of heavy-duty trucks with a total weight of 76 tonnes and their trailer combinations (HCT) and traffic safety in Northern Finland, on the roads of Ivalo-Rovaniemi and Kuusamo-Oulu. The studies shall be carried out by means of tests and testing arrangements in accordance with specific standards, as well as by measurements and follow-ups carried out during normal transport operations. The study examines, using experimental methods, the road safety, climbing ability, performance of braking systems and other emerging issues of HCT timber combinations in changing weather and road conditions. In addition, the study examines the effects of load structures, axles and tyre equipment, drawbar load, wear and damage of towing devices on road safety and transport efficiency related to the technical dimensioning of HCT combinations. The energy and cost-effectiveness of transport is assessed on the basis of driving performance measurements carried out on the road. The main objective of driving tracking is to collect, using experimental methods, extensive measurement and observation data as the basis for the research data, which forms the essential database “Road monitoring of HCT timber combinations on the roads of Northern Finland”. The measurements are carried out during the transport task by attaching measuring instruments to the combination of vehicles. The measurement systems of vehicle manufacturers are also used. An important part of the measurements are carried out in a closed area, e.g. at the airport. The sustainability of the road network has given rise to a great deal of discussion in the context of the permit treatment of HCT combinations. The project has included its own research component for experimental measurement of the structure of the road and bridges. The project will develop measurement methods to measure deformations in the road frame and measure the hull deformation and recovery from stress under the influence of various vehicles on the road section of the HCT route. There are also bridges on the northern HCT route, which can be measured to determine the deformation of the bridge in the case of an HCT vehicle. The results of the study will provide an understanding of the road safety, energy and cost-effectiveness of transporting heavy timber combinations, environmental impacts and possible hazards and nuisances in the changing weather and road conditions in Northern Finland. The research will provide useful information for the design of transport, means of transport and road infrastructure and for the development of vehicle regulations. (English)

Tieverkon kestävyys on herättänyt paljon keskustelua HCT-yhdistelmien lupakäsittelyjen yhteydessä. Pohjoisen HCT-reitillä on myös siltoja, joista voidaan mittaamalla saada selville sillan muodonmuutos HCT-ajoneuvon tapauksessa. Tutkimuksen tuloksena saadaan käsitys raskaiden puutavarayhdistelmien kuljetuksien liikenneturvallisuudesta,energia- ja kustannustehokkuudesta, ympäristövaikutuksista ja mahdollisista vaara- ja haittatekijöistä Pohjois-Suomen muuttuvissa sää- ja tieolosuhteissa. Tutkimus tuottaa hyödyllistä tietoa kuljetusten, kuljetusvälineiden ja tieinfran suunnitteluun ja ajoneuvomääräysten kehittämiseen. (Finnish)
