As a consequence of ruminal fermentation, ruminants emit large amounts of methane into the atmosphere, a greenhouse gas with a warming potential 25 times higher than carbon dioxide. These emissions represent a high percentage of anthropogenic methane emissions and an increase in these emissions is expected in developed countries. To implement strategies for the mitigation of methane emissions it is necessary to obtain precise measurements of them in real conditions. Currently, there are different methods to quantify methane emissions in vivo in ruminant animals, including breathing chambers and the SF6 technique. The chambers require a large investment in infrastructure and have the disadvantage that the animals are not in normal housing and eating conditions. The system with SF6 tracer gas entails a high labor cost, in addition to offering highly variable results. In front of them, the modern automatic measurement systems offer advantages: minimum labor requirements, long measurement periods in the animals, reliable measurements and management conditions that resemble the real ones. The aim of the present project is to acquire an automatic system for the measurement of methane emissions in ruminants (small ruminants and cattle), which would be the first of these characteristics in a public research organization in Spain.
