THE FOOTPRINT OF GLOBAL CHANGE IS MANIFESTED IN MULTIPLE INDICATORS. AS EVIDENCE BUILDS UP, SOME PARADOXES ALSO ARISE. ONE OF INTRIGUING IS THAT SOME ECOSYSTEMS SEEM TO FOLLOW WITH GREATER FIDELITY INDICATORS OF GENERAL ATMOSPHERIC DYNAMICS (P.E., INCREASE IN CO2, AVERAGE ANNUAL TEMPERATURE), AVERAGED OVER LARGE TERRITORIES (P.E., NORTHERN HEMISPHERE), THAN THE LOCAL RECORD OF METEOROLOGICAL FLUCTUATIONS AND DEPOSITION AT MULTI-ANNUAL TIME SCALES. ATTENTION TO CAUSALITY CHAINS, THERE MUST BE MECHANISMS THAT JUSTIFY THIS APPARENT PARADOX, PROBABLY RELATED TO DIFFERENT CHARACTERISTIC TIMES OF REACTION OR RENEWAL. ONE OF THE ECOSYSTEMS IN WHICH THIS PHENOMENON HAS BEEN OBSERVED IS THE PLANKTON OF REMOTE LAKES. THIS IS A GOOD CASE STUDY TO ADDRESS THE QUESTION, BECAUSE THE PLANCTONIC SYSTEM, VERY REACTIVE AND CAPABLE OF CLOSELY COUPLED WITH ATMOSPHERIC FLUCTUATIONS, IS ALSO CONDITIONED BY TWO IMPORTANT RESERVOIRS OF LONG MATERIALS AND RESIDENCE TIME: SEDIMENT AND SUBTERRANEAN WATER COMPARTMENTS IN THE BASIN. THEREFORE, THE GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO UNDERSTAND HOW FLUCTUATIONS IN ATMOSPHERIC DYNAMICS ARE TRANSFERRED TO PLANKTON DYNAMICS AND TO WHAT EXTENT THEY DEPEND ON PROCESSES IN THE LAKE ITSELF (SUBPROJECT 1) AND PROCESSES IN ITS BASIN (SUBPROJECT 2). TO SOLVE THIS THE PROJECT PROPOSES: TO CLARIFY WHICH ARE THE BEST INDICATORS IN PLANCTONIC COMMUNITIES TO DISCERN BETWEEN ATMOSPHERIC INFLUENCE OF ENERGETIC CHARACTER (METEOROLOGIC), MATERIAL CHARACTER (FERTILISING) OR SYNERGY OF BOTH; II) TO STUDY HOW THE INTERNAL LOAD OF NUTRIENTS MODULATES DYNAMICS AT DIFFERENT TIME SCALES AND IS COUPLED WITH ATMOSPHERIC FLUCTUATIONS IN CIRCUMSTANCES OF LOW BASIN INFLUENCE; DETERMINE THE INFLUENCE OF SUBSURFACE AND SUBTERRANEAN WATERS ON THE GENERATION OF SURFACE FLOW TO THE LAKES; IV) ESTIMATE THE RATES OF BIOGEOCHEMICAL PROCESSES OCCURRING IN SUBTERRANEAN BEHAVIOURS AND HOW THIS CONDITIONS THE EXTERNAL LOAD OF NUTRIENTS TO THE LAKES; ESTIMATE THE ROLE OF UNIQUE LOW FREQUENCY AND HIGH INTENSITY EVENTS AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON AVERAGE INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL NUTRIENT LOADS; PROVIDE AN INTEGRATED VISION OF THE TRANSFER OF ATMOSPHERIC FLUCTUATIONS TO THE PLANCTONIC LAKES SYSTEM LOCATED IN REMOTE AREAS TO UNDERSTAND THE APPARENT PARADOXES SUGGESTED BY OBSERVATIONS. THE PROBLEM WILL BE ATTACKED WITH CASE STUDIES AND NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS. THE CENTRAL PYRENEES ARE THE EXPERIMENTAL ENCLAVE, NAMELY LAKE REDON AND THE BASIN OF THE RIBERA DE ST. NICOLAU IN THE NATIONAL PARK OF AIGUESTORTES I ESTANY DE SANT MAURICI. A BATTERY OF DIFFERENT ANALYTIC TECHNIQUES (P.E., STABLE ISOTOPES, MOLECULAR MARKERS) AND NUMERICS WILL BE USED IN STUDIES THAT INCLUDE: EXPERIMENTATION IN MESOCOSMOS; ANALYSIS OF MULTI-YEAR SERIES OF PLANCTONICA, BIOGEOQUIMICA AND METEOROLOGICA DYNAMICS, WITH DATA ALREADY AVAILABLE TO THE GROUP; HIGH RESOLUTION STUDIES OF SEDIMENT CONTROLS, IV) STUDIES OF SUBTERRANEAN COMPARTMENTS OF BASINS AND THEIR REACTIVITY; MODELLING OF THE TRANSPORT FROM THE BASIN TO THE LAKES; MODELLING OF ATMOSPHERIC COUPLING-SEDIMENTS AT MULTI-ANNUAL SCALES AND VII) MODELLING OF PLANCTONICA DYNAMICS AS A METABOLIC NETWORK. LA HUELLA DEL CAMBIO GLOBAL SE MANIFIESTA EN MULTIPLES INDICADORES. A MEDIDA QUE SE ACUMULAN EVIDENCIAS, TAMBIEN SURGEN ALGUNAS PARADOJAS. UNA DE INTRIGANTE ES POR QUE ALGUNOS ECOSISTEMAS PARECEN SEGUIR CON MAYOR FIDELIDAD INDICADORES DE DINAMICA ATMOSFERICA DE CARACTER GENERAL (P.E., INCREMENTO DE CO2, TEMPERATURA MEDIA ANUAL), PROMEDIADOS SOBRE AMPLIOS TERRITORIOS (P.E., HEMISFERIO NORTE), QUE EL REGISTRO LOCAL DE LAS FLUCTUACIONES METEOROLOGICAS Y DE DEPOSICION A ESCALAS DE TIEMPO PLURIANUALES. ATENDIENDONOS A CADENAS DE CAUSALIDAD, DEBEN EXISTIR MECANISMOS QUE JUSTIFIQUEN ESTA APARENTE PARADOJA, PROBABLEMENTE RELACIONADOS CON DISTINTOS TIEMPOS CARACTERISTICOS DE REACCION O RENOVACION. UNO DE LOS ECOSISTEMAS EN QUE SE HA OBSERVADO ESTE FENOMENO ES EL PLANCTON DE LAGOS REMOTOS. ESTE ES UN BUEN CASO DE ESTUDIO PARA ABORDAR LA CUESTION, PORQUE EL SISTEMA PLANCTONICO, MUY REACTIVO Y CAPAZ DE ACOPLARSE INTIMAMENTE CON LAS FLUCTUACIONES ATMOSFERICAS, TAMBIEN ESTA CONDICIONADO POR DOS RESERVORIOS IMPORTANTES DE MATERIALES Y TIEMPO DE RESIDENCIA LARGOS: EL SEDIMENTO Y LOS COMPARTIMENTOS SUBTERRANEOS DE AGUA EN LA CUENCA. POR TANTO, ESTE PROYECTO TIENE POR OBJETIVO GENERAL ENTENDER COMO SE TRANSFIERE LAS FLUCTUACIONES EN LA DINAMICA ATMOSFERICA A LA DINAMICA DEL PLANCTON Y EN QUE MEDIDA DEPENDEN DE PROCESOS EN EL PROPIO LAGO (SUBPROYECTO 1) Y DE PROCESOS EN SU CUENCA (SUBPROYECTO 2). PARA RESOLVERLO EL PROYECTO PLANTEA: I) DILUCIDAR CUALES SON LOS MEJORES INDICADORES EN LAS COMUNIDADES PLANCTONICAS PARA DISCERNIR ENTRE INFLUENCIA ATMOSFERICA DE CARACTER ENERGETICO (METEOROLOGICO), DE CARACTER MATERIAL (FERTILIZANTE) O DE SINERGIA DE AMBOS; II) ESTUDIAR COMO LA CARGA INTERNA DE NUTRIENTES MODULA LA DINAMICA A DISTINTAS ESCALAS TEMPORALES Y SE ACOPLA A FLUCTUACIONES ATMOSFERICAS EN CIRCUNSTANCIAS DE BAJA INFLUENCIA DE LA CUENCA; III) DETERMINAR LA INFLUENCIA DE LAS AGUAS SUBSUPERFICIALES Y SUBTERRANEAS EN LA GENERACION DEL FLUJO SUPERFICIAL QUE LLEGA A LOS LAGOS; IV) ESTIMAR LAS TASAS DE LOS PROCESOS BIOGEOQUIMICOS QUE TIENEN LUGAR EN LOS COMPORTAMIENTOS SUBTERRANEOS Y COMO ESTO CONDICIONA LA CARGA EXTERNA DE NUTRIENTES A LOS LAGOS; V) ESTIMAR EL PAPEL DE EVENTOS SINGULARES DE BAJA FRECUENCIA Y ALTA INTENSIDAD Y SU INFLUENCIA EN LAS CARGAS MEDIAS DE NUTRIENTES INTERNAS Y EXTERNAS; VI) PROVEER UNA VISION INTEGRADA DE LA TRANSFERENCIA DE LAS FLUCTUACIONES ATMOSFERICAS AL SISTEMA PLANCTONICO DE LOS LAGOS SITUADOS EN ZONAS REMOTAS QUE PERMITA ENTENDER LAS APARENTES PARADOJAS QUE LAS OBSERVACIONES SUGIEREN. EL PROBLEMA SE ATACARA CON CASOS DE ESTUDIO Y SIMULACIONES NUMERICAS. LOS PIRINEOS CENTRALES SON EL ENCLAVE EXPERIMENTAL, EN CONCRETO EL LAGO REDON Y LA CUENCA DE LA RIBERA DE ST. NICOLAU EN EL PARQUE NACIONAL DE AIGUESTORTES I ESTANY DE SANT MAURICI. SE EMPLEARA UNA BATERIA DE DISTINTAS TECNICAS ANALITICAS (P.E., ISOTOPOS ESTABLES, MARCADORES MOLECULARES) Y NUMERICAS EN ESTUDIOS QUE INCLUYEN: I) EXPERIMENTACION EN MESOCOSMOS; II) ANALISIS DE SERIES PLURIANUALES DE DINAMICA PLANCTONICA, BIOGEOQUIMICA Y METEOROLOGICA, CON DATOS QUE EL GRUPO YA POSEE; III) ESTUDIOS DE ALTA RESOLUCION DE TESTIGOS DE SEDIMENTO, IV) ESTUDIOS DE LOS COMPARTIMENTOS SUBTERRANEOS DE LAS CUENCAS Y SU REACTIVIDAD; V) MODELIZACION DEL TRASPORTE DE LA CUENCA HACIA LOS LAGOS; VI) MODELIZACION DEL ACOPLAMIENTO ATMOSFERA-SEDIMENTOS A ESCALAS PLURIANUALES Y VII) MODELIZACION DE LA DINAMICA PLANCTONICA COMO UNA RED METABOLICA.
