Property / summary: At the present time there is a network of three antennas that allow the measurement of surface currents in the easternmost part of the Strait managed by Puertos del Estado. The aim of this proposal is to extend the network of measures to the western part of the Strait, which also presents complex current patterns that are very difficult to predict with the hydrodynamic simulation models currently available. Without a doubt the possibility of having this network of measures would undoubtedly allow the most efficient management of any contingency in an area with an important ecological and tourist value but where there is a very high risk of accidental spills and shipwreck of people, mainly immigrants. As an added value the registration of these fields of current speed will be very valuable for several projects in which the behaviour of marine ecosystems in the region is studied for which the exchanges of properties between the basins of the Gulf of Cadiz and the Alboran Sea are of paramount importance. With this infrastructure, CACYTMAR wants to contribute significantly to the permanent observation systems of the Strait of Gibraltar by enhancing the Operational Oceanography System of the Andalusian Coasts in close coordination with Ports del Estado.
