Virtual Rehabilitation allows producing customizable, non-invasive, playful and rewarding treatments that serve as a complement in the traditional rehabilitation process for the reduction of WBA. The literature shows that when patients with ABI focus their attention on the control of movement, execution is impaired. Directing their attention to another source (eg, cognitive task) improves patient performance. However, there is no evidence of the effectiveness of dual cognitive-motor tasks with VR systems in the recovery of the WBA. So far, there is evidence of the effectiveness of psychological acceptance in the healthy coping of a number of medical conditions. One of the main disorders in patients with Acquired brain injury (ABI) is the Weight Bearing Asymmetry (WBA), which produces disturbances in postural control and risk of falls. Virtual Rehabilitation allows producing customizable, non-invasive, playful and rewarding treatments that serve as a complement in the traditional rehabilitation process for the reduction of WBA. However, there are few studies that corroborate the reduction of WBA by using VR systems which are based on the use of sensory cues. The literature shows that when patients with ABI focus their attention on the control of movement, execution is impaired. Redirecting their attention to another source (eg, cognitive task) improves patient performance. However, there is no evidence of the effectiveness of dual cognitive-motor tasks with VR systems in the recovery of the WBA. So far, there is evidence of the effectiveness of psychological acceptance in the healthy coping of a number of medical conditions. However, there is no evidence of the effectiveness of psychological acceptance in the rehabilitation of WBA in patients with ABI. Taking all of this into account, the aim of the project is to optimize the rehabilitation of the WBA in patients with ABI by using VR systems which incorporate sensory cues, a dual task, and psychological acceptance as coping strategy, through three novel and groundbreaking studies.
