In recent years, STOLT has focused its R & D activity on the study of intensive breeding of Senegalese sole, and especially on the study of the factors that make it possible to achieve the reproduction of cultivated animals, the main challenge of the sector. In previous studies (IDI-20111341), this problem was addressed from the point of view of nutritional factors that influence the quality and quantity of gametes under intensive conditions, and knowledge of artificial fertilisation (FA) of this species. The results allowed significant progress in FA of this species. Additionally, it was determined that although nutrition is a critical and fundamental aspect in reproduction, it is only part of the solution needed to solve reproductive dysfunction of cultivated breeding, the most important factor being in all cases the origin of the breeder, wild or cultivated. With this project, the company aims to continue research to achieve the closure of the reproductive cycle, through the study and design of reproductive, genetic and health strategies. _x000D_ the planned project, lasting 36 months, consists of 3 activities and a budget of 1,403,EUR 746:_x000D_ — Act. 1. Design of new systems of artificial fertilisation of sole by improving the volume and quality of semen of domesticated males. _x000D_ — Act. 2. Design of programs for genetic improvement of sole. _x000D_ — Act. 3. Design of methods of pathogenic control of breeders by non-invasive methods and improvement of the health quality of sole fry._x000D_ Scientific support will be provided from the following research centres: IEO, IRTA, Acuigen, INIA and ANFACO-CECOPESCA (30 % of the budget) as well as with the collaboration of GENEACUA and IMASDE._x000D_ With this R & D project it is expected to establish the basis for increasing the production of sole from 800 t in 2015 to 4.000 t by 2019.
