THE INPULSE PROJECT AIMS TO ADDRESS THE CHARACTERISATION OF OVERFLOW OR OVERFLOW RELATED TO THE OUTLET OF MEDITERRANEAN WATER (MOW) AS WELL AS THE CURRENT OCEANOGRAPHIC AND SEDIMENTARY PROCESSES IN THE CONTINENTAL SLOPE OF THE GULF OF CADIZ. FOR THIS PURPOSE, THE AIM IS TO IDENTIFY THE INTERRELATIONSHIP OF CURRENT AND RECENT OCEANOGRAPHIC PROCESSES WITH THE MORPHOLOGICAL FEATURES AND SEDIMENTARY CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MARGIN, USING REAL DATA AND NUMERIC SIMULATIONS. THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS OF THIS INTERACTION AND ITS INFLUENCE ON THE EXISTENCE AND DEVELOPMENT OF SPECIFIC HABITATS OR ON THE ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES THAT USE THE SEABED FOR THE LAYING OF CABLES, PIPELINES, ETC. ARE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT. ALL THIS IS COMPLEMENTED BY THE STUDY OF THE FEASIBILITY OF DEPLOYING AN UNDERSEA NETWORK OF SENSORS FOR THE MEASUREMENT AND QUANTIFICATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL VARIABLES. THE WORKING HYPOTHESIS IS THAT THE OVERFLOW OR OVERFLOW ASSOCIATED WITH THE MOW PRESENTS A STRUCTURE AND VARIABILITY AT MESOSCALE DIFFERENT FROM THAT OF MICROSCALE, AS A CONSEQUENCE OF THE EFFECT OF OTHER OCEANOGRAPHIC PROCESSES AND THEIR INTERACTION WITH THE FUND. THESE STRUCTURES PRESENT A VARIABILITY IN THE BEHAVIOR OF THE FRICTION LIMIT LAYER WITH THE BACKGROUND (BBL) THAT IS CAPABLE OF GENERATING PROCESSES THAT ARE STILL UNKNOWN BUT THAT ARE CONDITIONING BOTH SEDIMENTARY FACIES AND HABITAT TYPE. THE NEED TO STUDY AND QUANTIFY FOR THE FIRST TIME THESE PROCESSES AND THEIR INTERACTION WITH THE FUND REQUIRES MATHEMATICAL MODELLING AND EVALUATION OF THEIR IMPLICATIONS, BOTH SCIENTIFIC AND ECONOMIC. EL PROYECTO INPULSE PROPONE ABORDAR LA CARACTERIZACION DEL DESBORDAMIENTO U OVERFLOW RELACIONADO CON LA SALIDA DEL AGUA MEDITERRANEA (MOW) ASI COMO LOS PROCESOS OCEANOGRAFICOS Y SEDIMENTARIOS ACTUALES EN EL TALUD CONTINENTAL DEL GOLFO DE CADIZ. PARA ELLO, SE PRETENDE IDENTIFICAR LA INTERRELACION DE LOS PROCESOS OCEANOGRAFICOS ACTUALES Y RECIENTES CON LOS RASGOS MORFOLOGICOS Y LAS CARACTERISTICAS SEDIMENTARIAS DEL MARGEN, USANDO DATOS REALES Y SIMULACIONES NUMERICAS. SE TENDRAN EN CUENTA LAS IMPLICACIONES AMBIENTALES DE DICHA INTERACCION Y SU INFLUENCIA EN LA EXISTENCIA Y DESARROLLO DE HABITATS ESPECIFICOS O EN LAS ACTIVIDADES ECONOMICAS QUE UTILIZAN EL FONDO MARINO PARA EL TENDIDO DE CABLES, GASODUCTOS, ETC. TODO ELLO SE COMPLEMENTA CON EL ESTUDIO DE LA VIABILIDAD DEL DESPLIEGUE DE UNA RED SUBMARINA DE SENSORES PARA LA MEDIDA Y CUANTIFICACION DE VARIABLES AMBIENTALES. LA HIPOTESIS DE TRABAJO ES QUE EL DESBORDAMIENTO U OVERFLOW ASOCIADO A LA MOW PRESENTA UNA ESTRUCTURA Y VARIABILIDAD A MESOESCALA DIFERENTE DE LA DE MICROESCALA, COMO CONSECUENCIA DEL EFECTO DE OTROS PROCESOS OCEANOGRAFICOS Y DE SU INTERACCION CON EL FONDO. DICHAS ESTRUCTURAS PRESENTAN UNA VARIABILIDAD EN EL COMPORTAMIENTO DE LA CAPA DE LIMITE DE FRICCION CON EL FONDO (BENTHIC BOUNDARY LAYER, BBL) QUE ES CAPAZ DE GENERAR PROCESOS AUN DESCONOCIDOS PERO QUE ESTAN CONDICIONANDO TANTO LAS FACIES SEDIMENTARIAS COMO EL TIPO DE HABITAT. LA NECESIDAD DE ESTUDIAR Y CUANTIFICAR POR PRIMERA VEZ ESTOS PROCESOS Y SU INTERACCION CON EL FONDO REQUIERE DE UN MODELADO MATEMATICO Y DE LA EVALUACION DE SUS IMPLICACIONES, TANTO CIENTIFICAS COMO ECONOMICAS. ESTA PROPUESTA SE ENMARCA EN EL RETO 2 IDENTIFICADO EN LA ESTRATEGIA ESPAÑOLA DE CIENCIA Y TECNOLOGIA Y DE INNOVACION, COMO: ¿SEGURIDAD, CALIDAD ALIMENTARIA; ACTIVIDAD AGRARIA PRODUCTIVA Y SOSTENIBLE; SOSTENIBILIDAD DE RECURSOS NATURALES, INVESTIGACION MARINA Y MARITIMA¿._x000D_ EL PROYECTO INPULSE SE CONCIBE COMO UN PROYECTO COORDINADO DE TRES SUBPROYECTOS, INVOLUCRANDO A 28 INVESTIGADORES DE DIFERENTES DISCIPLINAS CIENTIFICAS: GEOLOGIA MARINA, OCEANOGRAFIA FISICA, ECOLOGIA BENTONICA, MATEMATICAS APLICADAS, INGENIERIA ACUSTICA Y DE LA COMUNICACION. ESTA VARIEDAD DE DISCIPLINAS Y SUS METODOLOGIAS ESPECIFICAS HACEN NECESARIA UNA COORDINACION PARA EL ESTABLECIMIENTO DE LA MEJOR ESTRATEGIA ENCAMINADA A ALCANZAR LOS OBJETIVOS PLANTEADOS._x000D_ PARA LA CONSECUCION DEL PROYECTO INPULSE SE PLANTEA UNA APROXIMACION INTERDISCIPLINAR INTEGRANDO DATOS OCEANOGRAFICOS, GEOMORFOLOGICOS, SEDIMENTARIOS Y BENTONICOS DEL TALUD CONTINENTAL DEL GOLFO DE CADIZ, QUE SE USARAN PARA LA VALIDACION DE LOS MODELOS MATEMATICOS Y DE PREDICCION DE HABITATS. ESTA PROPUESTA SE ORGANIZA EN 5 OBJETIVOS ESPECIFICOS: 1) CARACTERIZACION, MODELIZACION Y SIMULACION NUMERICA DE LOS PROCESOS OCEANOGRAFICOS ACTUALES Y SU VARIABILIDAD; 2) ANALISIS GEOMORFOLOGICO DEL FONDO MARINO A MESO Y MICROESCALA; 3) DETERMINACION Y CARACTERIZACION DE LOS PROCESOS SEDIMENTARIOS ACTUALES Y RECIENTES; 4) INTERACCION DE LA HIDRODINAMICA CON LOS RASGOS MORFOLOGICOS Y SEDIMENTARIOS Y SU INFLUENCIA EN EL DESARROLLO DE LOS HABITATS; Y 5) DISEÑO Y DESPLIEGUE DE UN DEMOSTRADOR DE RED SUBMARINA DE SENSORES CON COMUNICACION ACUSTICA. _x000D_ EL PROYECTO INPULSE TIENE EL SOPORTE DE VARIAS EMPRESAS Y ENTIDADES: ENAGAS, S.A., GAS NATURAL, S.A., SOCIEDAD ANONIMA DE ELECTRONICA SUBMARINA (SAES) Y CONTINENTAL MARGINS RESEARCH GROUP (DEPARTMENT OF EARTH SCIENCES, ROYAL HOLLOWAY UNIVERSITY OF LONDON).
