Background: changes in foetal growth and low birth weight are associated with an increased risk of disease in adult life. Maternal diet and nutritional status, and exposure to environmental pollutants, are considered the main determinants of foetal growth, as they alter the availability of nutrients among which are compounds that play a key role in early development. Objectives: the overall objective of this study is to characterise maternal urinary metaboloma throughout pregnancy, in order to identify metabolomic profiles associated with foetal growth alterations considering sources of variation of metaboloma based on lifestyles and exposure to organophosphate pesticides. Methodology: prospective birth cohort of 646 mother-child binomies. Women will be captured during the first trimester of pregnancy and monitored during pregnancy and birth of the child. A non-directed metabolomic analysis in urine from the first and third trimester of gestation will be performed using liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry (UHPLC-UHR-QTOF System) to identify variations in metabolite levels associated with fetal growth alterations and anthropometry at birth. Multivariate analyses will be performed to explore the association between biomarkers and indicators of metabolomic alterations and the weight of children at birth, considering as covariables the lifestyle, diet and exposure to contaminants of the pregnant women selected for the study.
