The main objective of this study is to identify alterations in peripheral markers of systemic inflammation and bacterial translocation in three groups of 40 subjects each: patients with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and healthy subjects. The project will also determine the relationship between adherence to the Mediterranean diet/life style and inflammatory markers and bacterial translocation in both patient groups. As secondary objectives we consider evaluating the role of abuse substances in the intestinal flora, bacterial translocation and peripheral inflammation; determine the relationship between the degree of adherence to the Mediterranean diet/life style and the overall and neurocognitive functioning of patients; compare the composition of the intestinal microbiota (percentage of bacteria composition) and the possible existence of dysbiosis in patients with bipolar disorder, patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls. For this we propose a cross-sectional observational study with case-control design in which the adherence to the Mediterranean diet/life style, intestinal dysbiosis, markers of bacterial translocation and parameters of inflammation, oxidative stress and neurotrophins will be evaluated in a single visit. During the same visit, a clinical, neurocognitive and functional evaluation of the subjects will be performed. (English)

(Spanish)
