EL PROYECTO AQUABIOPACK PRETENDE VALORIZAR BIOMASA DE ORIGEN ACUATICO PARA LA EXTRACCION DE MATERIALES LIGNOCELULOSICOS UTILES PARA EL DESARROLLO DE MATERIALES BIOPOLIMERICOS SOSTENIBLES CON PROPIEDADES OPTIMAS PARA SU APLICACION EN ENVASADO DE ALIMENTOS. EN LINEA CON LAS BASES DE LA ECONOMIA CIRCULAR, SE UTILIZARA BIOMASA PROCEDENTE DE RESIDUOS DE ORIGEN ACUATICO, EVITANDO ASI LA UTILIZACION DE RECURSOS AGRICOLAS, QUE COMPITEN CON APLICACIONES DE MAYOR VALOR AÑADIDO EN EL SECTOR ALIMENTARIO. EN CONCRETO, SE PROPONE LA UTILIZACION DE TRES FUENTES DE BIOMASA: 1) RESIDUOS DE LA PLANTA ACUATICA POSIDONIA OCEANICA, ACUMULADOS EN LAS COSTAS DEL LITORAL MEDITERRANEO; 2) RESIDUOS GENERADOS TRAS LA ELIMINACION DE LA PLANTA ACUATICA INVASORA ARUNDO DONAX EN AREAS DE AGUA DULCE; Y 3) LOS RESIDUOS INDUSTRIALES GENERADOS TRAS LA EXTRACCION DE AGAR A PARTIR DEL ALGA GELIDIUM SESQUIPEDALE. SE LLEVARAN A CABO PROCESOS DE EXTRACCION SECUENCIAL PARA OBTENER DIFERENTES MATERIALES LIGNOCELULOSICOS Y SE PRESTARA ESPECIAL ATENCION A LA OPTIMIZACION DE DICHOS PROCEDIMIENTOS, SIMPLIFICANDO LAS ETAPAS DE EXTRACCION, A LA VEZ QUE SE GENERAN MATERIALES CON PROPIEDADES OPTIMAS. EL PROYECTO PRETENDE DESARROLLAR UNA METODOLOGIA BASADA EN LA COMBINACION DE TECNICAS AVANZADAS DE DISPERSION A ANGULOS BAJOS CON METODOS COMPLEMENTARIOS, TALES COMO MICROSCOPIA Y ESPECTROSCOPIA, PARA INVESTIGAR LA ESTRUCTURA JERARQUICA DE LA CELULOSA Y DE LOS COMPONENTES DE LA MATRIZ DE LAS PAREDES CELULARES VEGETALES EN LAS DISTINTAS FUENTES DE BIOMASA Y EN LOS MATERIALES LIGNOCELULOSICOS EXTRAIDOS, PARA DETERMINAR INEQUIVOCAMENTE EL IMPACTO DE CADA ETAPA DE PURIFICACION. ESTO PROPORCIONARA LAS BASES PARA LA OPTIMIZACION DEL PROCESO COMPLETO DE EXTRACCION, ESTABLECIENDO UNA RELACION ENTRE PROCESADO, ESTRUCTURA Y PROPIEDADES DE LOS MATERIALES OBTENIDOS. SEGUIDAMENTE, LOS MATERIALES LIGNOCELULOSICOS CON LAS PROPIEDADES MAS PROMETEDORAS SE UTILIZARAN PARA GENERAR ESTRUCTURAS DE ENVASADO BIOPOLIMERICAS Y DE ALTO RENDIMIENTO, CON PROPIEDADES OPTIMAS PARA SU APLICACION EN EL ENVASADO DE ALIMENTOS. AQUABIOPACK AIMS TO VALORISE AQUATIC BIOMASS FOR THE EXTRACTION OF LIGNOCELLULOSIC MATERIALS WITH VALUE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF ECO-FRIENDLY AND SUSTAINABLE BIO-BASED AND BIODEGRADABLE POLYMERS WITH IMPROVED PROPERTIES FOR FOOD PACKAGING APPLICATIONS. COMPLYING WITH THE PRINCIPLES OF CIRCULAR ECONOMY, LIGNOCELLULOSIC BIOMASS WILL BE SOURCED FROM AQUATIC BIOMASS WASTE, HENCE AVOIDING COMPETITION WITH HIGHER ADDED VALUE FOOD APPLICATIONS. IN PARTICULAR, THREE DIFFERENT BIOMASS SOURCES ARE PROPOSED AS THE RAW MATERIALS: 1) RESIDUES OF THE MARINE PLANT POSIDONIA OCEANICA ACCUMULATED IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA SHORES; 2) RESIDUES GENERATED FROM THE REMOVAL OF THE INVASIVE AQUATIC PLANT ARUNDO DONAX FROM FRESHWATER ENVIRONMENTS; AND 3) THE INDUSTRIAL WASTE GENERATED AFTER THE EXTRACTION OF AGAR FROM GELIDIUM SESQUIPEDALE SEAWEED. SEQUENTIAL EXTRACTION PROCEDURES WILL BE APPLIED TO GENERATE LIGNOCELLULOSIC MATERIALS AND EFFORTS WILL BE FOCUSED ON SIMPLIFYING THE EXTRACTION PROCESS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE (TO REDUCE PRODUCTION COSTS AND TIMES) WHILE OBTAINING MATERIALS WITH THE DESIRED PROPERTIES. THE PROJECT AIMS TO DEVELOP A METHODOLOGY BASED ON THE COMBINATION OF SMALL ANGLE SCATTERING TECHNIQUES WITH COMPLEMENTARY METHODS SUCH AS MICROSCOPY AND SPECTROSCOPY, TO INVESTIGATE THE HIERARCHICAL ARCHITECTURE OF CELLULOSE AND THE CELL WALL MATRIX COMPONENTS IN THE DIFFERENT BIOMASS SOURCES AND IN THE EXTRACTED LIGNOCELLULOSIC MATERIALS TO UNEQUIVOCALLY DETERMINE THE IMPACT OF EACH PROCESSING STEP. THIS WILL THEREFORE PROVIDE THE BASIS TO OPTIMISE THE WHOLE EXTRACTION PROCESS ESTABLISHING A LINK BETWEEN PROCESSING, ATTAINED STRUCTURE AND RESULTING PROPERTIES OF THE MATERIALS. SUBSEQUENTLY, THOSE LIGNOCELLULOSIC MATERIALS WITH THE MOST PROMISING PROPERTIES WILL BE USED TO GENERATE HIGH-PERFORMANCE BIO-BASED PACKAGING STRUCTURES WITH OPTIMUM PROPERTIES FOR THEIR APPLICATION IN THE FOOD PACKAGING SECTOR.
