This proposal focuses on the cultural impact of ancient Cyprus on modern Europe and moves in three directions: The Cypriot identity in the Greco-Roman world is initially examined, with particular emphasis on the literary function of Cypriot myths. The direct or indirect influence of ancient Cypriot myths on Western culture, focusing on literature and the arts, is then explored. Finally, the uptake of the ancient Cypriot culture in contemporary Cypriot and Greek literature is commented on and a comparative analysis of the European and Cypriot-Greek approach is being attempted. Our approach will be particularly sensitive to the concept of interferivity. Previous texts form parts of our experience and produce cognitive models, which are the structures with which individuals and communities organise the knowledge of the world. The implementation of the research proposal will benefit Cyprus at the level of research, education and culture, as it will examine traditions and myths of antiquity directly linked to Cyprus, will demonstrate Cyprus’ dynamic contribution to the wider heritage of Greco-Roman culture and contribute to the identification of Cypriot identity.
