The most interesting such location is located on the island of Keros in the Cyclades, where during the period 2750-2300 BC, a unique combination of various factors foreshadows the urbanisation processes that will follow shortly afterwards in other areas. In particular, the factors found in Keros are: 1) centralism, 2) the exceptional scope, 3) the intensification, 4) the imposingness, 5) intense ritual element. The proposed research project aims to examine the social processes that took place in Keros during its 450 years of history. In particular, the study focuses on three axes. The first is organic residues, which will be examined in terms of intensifying and diversifying the means of living. The second relates to metalworking indications: melting, casting, and finishing metal objects. The third axis concerns architectural majesty. Keros’ architectural program was unprecedented for its time and was not surpassed until the time of the palaces of Crete. These three strands will be explored through a series of specialised approaches and the result will be the first comprehensive interdisciplinary investigation of the origins of urbanisation in the Aegean, with significant implications of the study worldwide.
