In Nyköping and the surrounding area, the level of collaboration between companies and academia is generally very low. This can be explained partly by the fact that the geographical area has no academic connection. In addition, residents are generally low-educated, which in part have the same explanation. Nyköping with the crane municipalities need to attract potential students and increase the availability of lifelong learning also in this part of Sörmland. This creates conditions for good skills supply and increased innovation capacity and competitiveness in the region’s companies. This application for implementation projects has been preceded by a feasibility study demonstrating the low innovation activity in the region. There is also a desire from the region’s business community to take part in the formation of an innovation accelerator as well as training to meet the skills needs that exist and will be present in the regional business sector in the future. The project will address the above challenges by, among other things, creating forms of collaboration with the regional support system and HEIs as well as innovation support efforts in companies. The project will also make efforts to expand Campus Nyköping’s educational offerings towards the skills needs expressed by companies, primarily in terms of IT and technology. At the end of the project, there is expected to be established local innovation support. There is also expected to be a larger range of higher education based on identified skills needs in collaboration with other higher education institutions. In the long term, the project is expected to contribute to increased innovation and competitiveness in the business sector, as well as an increased proportion of highly educated people among the region’s inhabitants. (Swedish)
