V dnešní době je patrná větší snaha chránit životní prostředí, mimo jiné i tím, že se zavádí technologické procesy, které jsou přívětivější a zároveň vykazují nižší energetickou náročnost. Právě z tohoto důvodu se do popředí více dostávají biotechnologické procesy, díky kterým je možné z odpadní biomasy a jiných obnovitelných zdrojů termochemickými a enzymatickými postupy připravit látky nahrazující stávající suroviny z fosilních zdrojů a to mnohdy za výhodnějších energetických podmínek. a.
