The border region around Bratislava is characterized by particularly strong population growth. This also requires well-functioning cross-border healthcare. However, the lack of cooperation between the two countries in this area leads to inequalities in access to local health services. This has become noticeable in recent years, especially in the care for neonatal emergencies. Since no cross-border rescue trips are currently possible, neonates must be transferred from Hainburg State Hospital - which does not have a paediatric ward- to Murgelbach State Hospital which is 74km away whilst Bratislava Children's University Hospital is only 16km away. The "Bridges for Birth" project is the first attempt to establish long-term sustainable cross-border healthcare in the Austrian-Slovak border area. In addition to the expansion of the hospital cooperation across the border, which will enable neonatal emergencies to be transported from the LK Hainburg to the nearby Bratislava Children's University Hospital in the future, future cooperation potentials will also be assessed and basic conditions for the implementation of cross-border patient care will be created. As a result, the performance of health care systems can be reconciled with the needs of the local population thus sustainably improving the quality of life. (English)
