The green banks of the Danube in Romania-Bulgaria cross border area, the woods, wetlands and islands offer an opportunity for diverse outdoor activities and by networking of different stakeholders, diverse products can be developed. Cross-border offers allow local tourists to meet neighboring cultures and nature and give visitors from distant countries the unique opportunity to discover a whole new region consisting of various landscapes, ethnicities and traditions. The project partners identified two new activities that combine green tourism with healthy activities whilst with small costs. These activities had a significant growth in the last years and could have a major impact on the cross border region, especially the Danube region. The proposed activities are hiking and marathons on the natural and cultural sites that the cross border region has to offer. Common hiking standards, which will be introduced to stakeholders from Romania and Bulgaria, aim to draw hiking and accommodation conditions closer to tourist expectations, nevertheless preserving the countries’ unique appearance and atmosphere. The marathons will promote the region, a healthy lifestyle and will attract tourists in the region by organizing joint events on important natural and cultural areas. The total budget of 498884.65 euro will be invested in creation of the 2 integrated tourism products and elaboration of 2 common strategies valorizing (including raising awareness) the cultural and natural heritage through its restoration and promotion for sustainable economic uses, for pilot actions proposed to be developed and necessary equipment to implement them. During the project implementation an interactive web portal will be constructed that will support both tourism products along with a mobile application with trails (hiking/marathon) and other means of communication. The web portal can improve access to information for both potential stakeholders and tourists. The mobile application is the new mechanism that the project will use to attract young people and foreign tourist because it helps to deliver the information much faster and efficient than the conventional ways. The project partners will procure all the technical equipment necessary for the green and healthy tourism products to be practiced in complete safety and leisure: equipment for camping (tents, open tents, sleeping bags, camping furniture and equipment, cooking equipment, head light) and equipment for organizing outdoor events – marathons (banners, pop-up display, Timing system), facilities for runners (toilets, water and food stands, Photo tagging services), warm-up crew, sound system, open tent, Traffic Cones, Course Signage, Start/Finish Line Signage and minivan with minimum 2 seats in the limit mentioned in Annex C for motor vehicles that will carry all the technical equipment and will be used for technical support. Pilot actions will be developed in order to put in practice the project indicators and ensure the sustainability. Both tourism products will be promoted and developed using 2 common strategies valorizing the cultural and natural heritage. Considering the programme output indicators related to the project expected results, the project foreseen: 2 new integrated tourism products created covering 4,65% of the programme output indicator for this call for proposals (I9) and 2 common strategies developed covering 8,7% of the programme output indicator for this call for proposals (I10). The project budget, 498884.65 euro, in comparison with the financial indicator for PA2 represents only 1,71% from the output indicator for this call for proposals (I12). The activities developed during and after the project implementation period will increase the number of tourist overnights in the region up to 5140, covering 0.97% from the programme result indicator for this priority axis.
