The project was initiated in order to address the conservation and management issues of bisons living in an unsuitable area (Kėdainiai, Panevėžys district municipality)._x000D_In recent years the number of bisons has increased rapidly. However, the area where a large part of the population of the free-living bison population is now concentrated is not appropriate because the bisons live in intensive farming areas and are dependent on crops. As the bisons cause considerable damage to agriculture, negative attitudes towards the species are formed by farmers and locals. _x000D_Territory is also not appropriate because bisons do not have the ability to connect with populations in neighbouring countries. Due to the dense road network, the herd of bisons is kept in an isolated area, thus reducing the genetic diversity of the bisons. If at least some of the Lithuanian bisons were to live in southern Lithuania, it would be more favourable to combine the bison herd with other populations of bisons._x000D_To solve the problems described, it is envisaged to carry out regular observations and surveys of the population of bisons living in the wild and in captivity; the transfer, adaptation and release of part of the population of free-living bisons into temporary housing enclosures on biotopes suitable for them; cooperate with foreign partners on conservation and management of bisons and exchange of bisons; to inform the public about the activities carried out, to implement preventive measures.
