Lithuanian wholesale companies assessed the need for investment in human capital, because a qualified and professional team of employees is necessary for companies, which would be flexible in a constantly changing economic situation and could compete effectively in a constantly changing market, raising labour productivity indicators. These changes require companies to react rapidly, adapt and take the initiative to change and improve through training. Professional training will allow each company to strengthen its position in a fierce competitive market, to guarantee higher quality of services and service, to set up priority scales and flexible pricing system. Growing demand for skilled labour — a lack of it, is becoming a major brake on the development of enterprises. Working without an initiative to develop and develop the competences of their employees, the level of efficiency of work, the relationship with employers would remain at the same level or become deteriorating. A large part of the existing workforce is not adequately matched by the needs of the company, therefore, the upskilling of employees has a direct impact on the business sphere, since only this can ensure a more efficient development of trade by actively developing sales in local and foreign markets. The implementation of professional training would improve the knowledge of employees about new management technologies, markets, self-assessment of risks and optimisation of the supply chain, etc., raise the level of management, develop practical skills by applying and using the acquired knowledge and, above all, create greater added value in SMEs, increase their viability, financial stability and the quality of human resources. Without EU support, wholesalers would be deprived of the opportunity to systematically and adequately improve the qualification of their employees, to improve the necessary professional skills necessary for the successful development of the company’s activities and to adapt the employees to the changing needs of the Lithuanian labour market.
