Oncological diseases are one of the most common causes of death worldwide, although most deaths can be prevented by early diagnosis. In the European Union and Lithuania, malignancies are the second most common cause of death after heart disease. In Lithuania, oncological diseases affect as many as 3 per cent of the population, that is, about 100,000 people, and about 17 000 new cases are diagnosed every year. In 2017, 20 887 unique outpatients and 3 683 unique inpatient patients were consulted on oncological diseases in Santara clinics of Vilnius University Hospital. Based on the number of patients present and their change over the last 5 years, the estimated number of oncological patients for the following year is 31 502. In order to achieve the goal of the project — to improve the quality and accessibility of specialised oncological disease prevention, early diagnosis and treatment services in Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Clinics, innovative equipment will be purchased during the project. The project will improve the quality and availability of early diagnosis, prevention and oncological diagnostics and treatment methods, reduce morbidity among target groups and reduce early mortality from malignancies.
