The aim of the project is to develop new solutions for the wider and smarter use of renewable energy in detached residential areas. Climate change mitigation requires energy transformation and increasingly decentralised sustainable energy production. Recent research results require ever faster solutions at all levels, globally, nationally, regionally and also at individual level. In addition to building-specific small solar power plants in Finland, sustainable energy solutions need to be found also at residential level. Not always the roof shape, orientation or shadowing elements even possible for an efficient photovoltaic system. Regional solar power plants built in larger units are also a more cost-effective way of producing clean energy than house-specific power plants. Solutions based on the shared use of a regional solar power plant and an energy storage facility can cover a greater proportion of energy needs than house-specific micro-electric power plants. Smart steering and demand response can further improve the self-supply rate. The project will develop new business models and technical solutions that enable smart regional energy production and use. Operating models and technical solutions will be piloted at Naantali Housing Fair 2022. The pilot system includes a multi-building solar power plant and an energy storage facility connected to dwellings by means of a smart micro-grid. The smart micro-grid enables the optimisation of the use of renewable energy produced at local level and ensures that the electricity produced is distributed equally to residents. It will also enable electric transport charging stations to be integrated into the system. In this way, carbon-neutral energy can also be used as an energy source for electric cars and other electric means of transport. The final report of the TEM Smart Grid Working Group describes the need for changes to Finnish legislation to enable energy communities and demand response mechanisms. The aim of the KAEV project is to explore the possibilities offered by existing legislation and future legislation in sight for the efficient use of new regional energy solutions. The project utilises digital simulation software and Control Hardware In the Loop environments, which enable the development and testing of energy management systems even before the actual piloting. At the Naantali Housing Fair, the systems will be introduced and presented to the general public at the pilot site. Development and piloting offers SMEs the opportunity to bring new services and equipment to the market that can reduce their own carbon footprint and have a positive impact on the carbon footprint of Southwest Finland. Around the technologies and new operating models developed in the project’s pilots, an innovation platform for companies, research institutes and municipal entities will be built, where different actors can jointly form new service models and strengthen Finland’s position as a pioneer in sustainable regional energy production and use. The project implements all the horizontal principles of the Structural Funds. The most important are the impacts on environmental and economic sustainability. The new operating models and technical solutions developed, as well as their piloting, will contribute to the development of regional energy production and electric transport. This development has significant direct and indirect impacts on environmental sustainability. In addition, the business models developed by the project will enable the creation of new sustainable business and services. Sustainable regional energy production also contributes to the well-being of the people living in the region and democratises the use of sustainable energy by bringing it to the benefit of an increasing number of people. (Finnish)
