The CRISTMAG project (Scientific PI: François Faure) aims to determine the behaviour of volatils (H2O, CO2, Cl, F, P, S) during the crystallisation of magmas and their respective roles in volcanological processes and eruptive dynamisms. It will be based at the Centre for Petrographic and Geochemical Research (CRPG, UMR 7358) in Vandoeuvre-les-Nancy. The purpose of the project is to determine precisely the respective role of volatile elements and crystals in magmas during their uplifts. Its realisation involves improving methods of measuring volatile elements, which will be achieved by optimising vacuum quality in ionic probes and developing high-precision standards. The crystallisation of the magma throughout the rise in the magmatic ducts will be determined by dynamic crystallisation experiments and by magnetic susceptibility anisotropy measurements on feeding threads. The results will establish laws of solubilities to determine the evolution of magmatic reservoirs during crystallisation and thus estimate the evolution of the dangerousness of volcanoes. This project will develop research infrastructures within CPRG’s experimental petrology and geochemistry platforms. He will support the CRPG’s desire to cover scientific issues ranging from the formation of magmas to their surface expressions in the form of volcanoes (English)
