TODAY WE HAVE CLEAR EVIDENCE THAT SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLES (SMBHS; IN ENGLISH SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLES) ARE ABLE TO GOVERN AND CONTROL THE EVOLUTION OF THE GALAXIES THAT CONTAIN THEM. MOREOVER, THE FORMATION AND EVOLUTION OF GALAXIES AND SMBHS SEEMS TO HAVE DEVELOPED SIMULTANEOUSLY THROUGHOUT THE LIFE OF THE UNIVERSE. UNFORTUNATELY, WE STILL DO NOT KNOW WHEN THIS APPARENT RELATIONSHIP OF CO-DEPENDENCE BEGAN AND WHAT ARE THE PHYSICAL MECHANISMS BY WHICH SMBHS ARE CAPABLE OF INFLUENCING THE GROWTH OF THE GALAXIES THAT CONTAIN THEM. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PROBLEMS WE STILL ENCOUNTER IS THAT WE DO NOT HAVE A COMPLETE CENSUS OF THE SMBHS POPULATION. DURING THE ACTIVE GROWTH PHASE OF SMBHS THE HOST GALAXIES ARE SEEN AS ACTIVE (AGNS, OF THE ACTIVE GALACTIC NUCLEI). HOWEVER, MOST OF THE ACCRETION PHENOMENA THROUGHOUT THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE OCCUR AT A STAGE WHEN THE AGNS ARE VERY LUMINOUS BUT ARE OBSCURED BY HUGE AMOUNTS OF MATERIAL (GAS AND DUST), WHICH MAKES THEIR DETECTION VERY DIFFICULT. MOST DARKENED SMBHS OUTSIDE THE LOCAL UNIVERSE CONTINUE UNDETECTED, ESPECIALLY SMBHS THAT SUFFER THE MOST EXTREME ABSORPTIONS, KNOWN AS AGN COMPTON-THICK. THIS PROJECT HAS AS ITS MAIN OBJECTIVE THE SEARCH AND STUDY OF THE PHENOMENON OF ACCRETION IN THE MOST OBSCURED AGNS IN RED SHIFTS Z~0.1-2. THIS WAS DONE BY ANALYSING TWO LARGE-SIZED AGN SAMPLES SELECTED IN X-RAYS AND MID-INFRARED USING X-RAY, OPTIC AND INFRARED DATA FROM XMM-NEWTON, WISE AND GROUND-BASED TELESCOPES (MAINLY THAT AND GTC). BOTH SAMPLES HAVE A NUMBER OF PROPERTIES THAT MAKE THEM UNIQUE FOR THIS TYPE OF STUDY. THE MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECT ARE THE DETERMINATION OF: HOW DARKENED AGNS HAVE EVOLVED TO Z~2; B) THE FRACTION OF THE HISTORY OF ACCRETION OF THE UNIVERSE THAT HAS TAKEN PLACE IN OBSCURED AGN, ESPECIALLY IN COMPTON-THICK OBJECTS AND IF THE CONTRIBUTION OF THESE LATTER TO THE TOTAL POPULATION OF AGN DECREASES TO HIGH LUMINOSITIES; C) THE PROPERTIES (COVERAGE FACTOR) OF THE MATERIAL RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DARKENING OF THE NUCLEAR REGION OF THE AGNS. THE FINANCING OF THIS PROJECT WILL ALLOW THE CONSOLIDATION OF THIS LINE OF RESEARCH IN THE GROUP OF GALAXIES AND AGN OF THE INSTITUTE OF PHYSICS OF CANTABRIA (IFCA; CSIC-UC), ESPECIALLY THANKS TO THE INCORPORATION OF A DOCTORAL STUDENT. A 2-YEAR PROJECT IS REQUESTED DURING WHICH EXISTING COLLABORATIONS WITH THE GALAXY GROUP AND AGN WILL BE STRENGTHENED, WHICH CURRENTLY DEVELOPS STUDIES WITH COMPLEMENTARY OBJECTIVES TO THOSE PROPOSED IN THIS PROJECT, WITH THE AIM OF UNITING THE DIFFERENT RESEARCH LINES IN THE NEXT CALL FOR R & D PROJECTS IN 2018. HOY EN DIA DISPONEMOS DE EVIDENCIAS CLARAS DE QUE LOS AGUJEROS NEGROS SUPERMASIVOS (SMBHS; EN INGLES SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLES) SON CAPACES DE GOBERNAR Y CONTROLAR LA EVOLUCION DE LAS GALAXIAS QUE LOS CONTIENEN. ES MAS, LA FORMACION Y EVOLUCION DE LAS GALAXIAS Y DE LOS SMBHS PARECE HABERSE DESARROLLADO DE MANERA SIMULTANEA A LO LARGO DE LA VIDA DEL UNIVERSO. DESGRACIADAMENTE SEGUIMOS SIN CONOCER CUANDO COMENZO ESTA APARENTE RELACION DE CO-DEPENDENCIA Y CUALES SON LOS MECANISMOS FISICOS POR LOS CUALES LOS SMBHS SON CAPACES DE INFLUIR EN EL CRECIMIENTO DE LAS GALAXIAS QUE LOS CONTIENEN. UNO DE LOS PROBLEMAS MAS IMPORTANTES CON LOS QUE AUN NOS ENCONTRAMOS ES QUE NO DISPONEMOS DE UN CENSO COMPLETO DE LA POBLACION DE SMBHS. DURANTE LA FASE DE CRECIMIENTO ACTIVO DE LOS SMBHS LA GALAXIAS QUE LOS ALBERGAN SE OBSERVAN COMO ¿ACTIVAS¿ (AGNS, DEL INGLES ACTIVE GALACTIC NUCLEI). SIN EMBARGO, LA MAYOR PARTE DEL FENOMENO DE ACRECION A LO LARGO DE LA HISTORIA DEL UNIVERSO SUCEDE EN UNA FASE EN LA QUE LOS AGN SON MUY LUMINOSOS PERO SE ENCUENTRAN OSCURECIDOS POR CANTIDADES ENORMES DE MATERIAL (GAS Y POLVO), LO QUE HACE MUY DIFICIL SU DETECCION. LA MAYOR PARTE DE LOS SMBHS OSCURECIDOS FUERA DEL UNIVERSO LOCAL CONTINUAN SIN SER DETECTADOS, EN ESPECIAL LOS SMBHS QUE SUFREN LAS ABSORCIONES MAS EXTREMAS, CONOCIDOS COMO AGN COMPTON-THICK. ESTE PROYECTO TIENE COMO OBJETIVO PRINCIPAL LA BUSQUEDA Y EL ESTUDIO DEL FENOMENO DE ACRECION EN LOS AGNS MAS OSCURECIDOS EN DESPLAZAMIENTOS AL ROJO Z~0.1-2. ESTO SE HARA ANALIZANDO DOS MUESTRAS DE AGN DE GRAN TAMAÑO SELECCIONADOS EN RAYOS X Y EN EL INFRARROJO MEDIO USANDO DATOS EN RAYOS X, OPTICOS E INFRARROJOS PROCEDENTES DE XMM-NEWTON, WISE Y DE TELESCOPIOS EN TIERRA (PRINCIPALMENTE ESO Y GTC). AMBAS MUESTRAS TIENEN UNA SERIE DE PROPIEDADES QUE LAS HACE UNICAS PARA ESTE TIPO DE ESTUDIOS. LOS OBJETIVOS PRINCIPALES DE ESTE PROYECTO SON LA DETERMINACION DE: A) COMO HAN EVOLUCIONADO LOS AGN OSCURECIDOS HASTA Z~2; B) LA FRACCION DE LA HISTORIA DE ACRECION DEL UNIVERSO QUE HA TENIDO LUGAR EN AGN OSCURECIDOS, EN ESPECIAL EN OBJETOS COMPTON-THICK Y SI LA CONTRIBUCION DE ESTOS ULTIMOS A LA POBLACION TOTAL DE AGN DISMINUYE A ALTAS LUMINOSIDADES; C) LAS PROPIEDADES (FACTOR DE COBERTURA) DEL MATERIAL RESPONSABLE DEL OSCURECIMIENTO DE LA REGION NUCLEAR DE LOS AGN. LA FINANCIACION DE ESTE PROYECTO PERMITIRA LA CONSOLIDACION DE ESTA LINEA DE INVESTIGACION EN EL GRUPO DE GALAXIAS Y AGN DEL INSTITUTO DE FISICA DE CANTABRIA (IFCA; CSIC-UC), ESPECIALMENTE GRACIAS A LA INCORPORACION DE UN ESTUDIANTE DE DOCTORADO. SE SOLICITA UN PROYECTO DE 2 AÑOS DE DURACION DURANTE EL CUAL SE REFORZARAN LAS COLABORACIONES EXISTENTES CON EL GRUPO DE GALAXIAS Y AGN, QUE ACTUALMENTE DESARROLLA ESTUDIOS CON OBJETIVOS COMPLEMENTARIOS A LOS PROPUESTOS EN ESTE PROYECTO, CON EL OBJETIVO DE UNIR LAS DIFERENTES LINEAS DE INVESTIGACION EN LA PROXIMA CONVOCATORIA DE PROYECTOS I+D EN EL AÑO 2018.
