Aging is the main risk factor for cerebrovascular diseases (such as stroke), cognition disorders and mobility. As the population ages, these pathologies associated with ageing entail enormous socio-economic costs. To ensure healthy ageing, preventive care and personalised interventions based on quantitative risk stratification are crucial. Our hypothesis is that microvascular lesions and alterations in cerebrovascular reactivity and self-regulation play a critical role in increasing the risk of cerebrovascular diseases, cognition and mobility disorders. Our secondary hypothesis is that having an easy-to-use monitoring system available to everyone and associated testing protocols will allow the early detection of subtle alterations in these factors, which will allow personalised interventions. In this coordinated project, we focus on the development and initial use of an innovative platform that measures at the brain and muscle level local microvascular hemodynamics and oxygen metabolism. This platform is based on a unique combination of technologies (near infrared spectroscopy and diffuse light correlation spectroscopy) and knowledge in different subjects (medical optics, neurology and geriatrics). It forms a set with its objectives (an innovative area of application with a crucial impact). We will work together with the company Hemophotonics to exploit the raids following the conclusions of the project. We will develop the platform (ICFO, SP1) guided by the expert end-users (Pere Virgili, SP2) to be a non-invasive point-of-care platform that will be validated and whose viability will be demonstrated on a selected group of subjects. We hope the results will lead to a huge socio-economic impact on healthy aging. (English)

(Spanish)
