The University of Murcia is a world leader in basic and applied research in the fields of visual, adaptive and biomedical optics. In particular, the Laboratory of Optics, LOUM, led by Professor Pablo Artal, has been dedicated since 1994 to the study of the properties of the human eye using the most advanced photonic technologies, as well as to the development of optical instruments based on adaptive optics and to the use of multiphotonic microscopy in the study of the structure of eye tissues and its correlation with various very diverse pathologies, from keratocone to Alzheimer’s. The activities of the LOUM range from the study of fundamental eye optic problems to real applications in which patients’ visual problems are solved. _x000D_ at present, one of the most innovative fields of research in visual and biomedical optics is the modification of the refractive index and structure of ocular tissues and ophthalmic materials using non-destructive techniques based on ultrashort and ultratensive pulse laser processing, the optimal wavelength being around 400nm. It is also proposed the processing of these materials using the interference of laser pulses. To characterise structural modification it is proposed to use Raman spectroscopy. The laser will also be used to replace the current multiphotonic microscope, acquired more than 10 years ago (English)
