ESTAMOS SUFRIENDO PERDIDAS DE BIODIVERSIDAD A UNA VELOCIDAD SIN PRECEDENTES, Y SABEMOS QUE ESTAS PERDIDAS PUEDEN AFECTAR AL FUNCIONAMIENTO DE LOS ECOSISTEMAS. SIN EMBARGO, TODAVIA TENEMOS UN CONOCIMIENTO MUY LIMITADO DE COMO LA PERDIDA DE BIODIVERSIDAD AFECTA A ALGUNAS FUNCIONES VITALES DE LOS ECOSISTEMAS, TALES COMO LA DESCOMPOSICION DE LA MATERIA VEGETAL Y EL RECICLADO DE ELEMENTOS, PROCESOS LIGADOS AL CICLO GLOBAL DEL CARBONO. ESTE PROYECTO ABORDA ALGUNAS DEFICIENCIAS EN NUESTRO CONOCIMIENTO SOBRE COMO LA BIODIVERSIDAD AFECTA A ESTAS FUNCIONES, UTILIZANDO COMO MODELO LOS ECOSISTEMAS FLUVIALES. EXAMINAMOS VARIAS CUESTIONES CLAVE: 1) ¿ES MAS IMPORTANTE EL EFECTO DE LA DIVERSIDAD FUNCIONAL (DE HOJARASCA Y DE DETRITIVOROS) QUE EL DE LA RIQUEZA DE ESPECIES EN LA DESCOMPOSICION? 2) ¿UNA MAYOR DIVERSIDAD DE HOJARASCA TIENE COMO RESULTADO UNA DESCOMPOSICION MAS EFICIENTE, TOMANDO EN CUENTA LOS DISTINTOS PRODUCTOS DE LA DESCOMPOSICION? 3) ¿CUAL ES LA IMPORTANCIA RELATIVA DE LOS EFECTOS BOTTOM-UP Y TOP-DOWN DE LA DIVERSIDAD SOBRE LA DESCOMPOSICION Y RECICLADO DE ELEMENTOS? Y 4) ¿ES EL EFECTO DE LA DIVERSIDAD SOBRE LA DESCOMPOSICION COMPARABLE EN MAGNITUD A LOS EFECTOS INDIVIDUALES Y CONJUNTOS DE FACTORES AMBIENTALES QUE SON CLAVE EN EL CAMBIO GLOBAL? ABORDAREMOS ESTAS PEGUNTAS UTILIZANDO EXPERIMENTOS DE LABORATORIO QUE SIMULARAN PERDIDAS DE BIODIVERSIDAD Y CAMBIOS AMBIENTALES REALISTAS, UTILIZANDO ALGUNAS TECNICAS NOVEDOSAS EN ESTE CONTEXTO QUE NOS PERMITAN INVESTIGAR QUE MECANISMOS BIOLOGICOS SON RESPONSABLES DE LOS EFECTOS DE LA BIODIVERSIDAD SOBRE LA DESCOMPOSICION DE LA MATERIA ORGANICA. WE ARE SUFFERING LOSSES OF BIODIVERSITY AT AN UNPRECEDENTED RATE, AND WE KNOW THAT THESE LOSSES CAN AFFECT THE FUNCTIONING OF ECOSYSTEMS. HOWEVER, WE STILL HAVE VERY LIMITED KNOWLEDGE OF HOW BIODIVERSITY LOSS AFFECTS SOME VITAL ECOSYSTEM FUNCTIONS, SUCH AS THE DECOMPOSITION OF PLANT MATTER AND THE RECYCLING OF ELEMENTS, PROCESSES LINKED TO THE GLOBAL CARBON CYCLE. THIS PROJECT ADDRESSES SOME SHORTCOMINGS IN OUR KNOWLEDGE OF HOW BIODIVERSITY AFFECTS THESE FUNCTIONS, USING RIVER ECOSYSTEMS AS A MODEL. WE EXAMINED A NUMBER OF KEY ISSUES: 1) IS THE EFFECT OF FUNCTIONAL DIVERSITY (OF LITTER AND DETRITIVORES) MORE IMPORTANT THAN THAT OF SPECIES RICHNESS IN DECOMPOSITION? 2) DOES A GREATER DIVERSITY OF LITTER LEAD TO MORE EFFICIENT DECOMPOSITION, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE DIFFERENT PRODUCTS OF DECOMPOSITION? 3) WHAT IS THE RELATIVE IMPORTANCE OF THE BOTTOM-UP AND TOP-DOWN EFFECTS OF DIVERSITY ON THE DECOMPOSITION AND RECYCLING OF ELEMENTS? AND 4) IS THE EFFECT OF DIVERSITY ON DECOMPOSITION COMPARABLE IN MAGNITUDE TO THE INDIVIDUAL AND POOLED EFFECTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS THAT ARE KEY TO GLOBAL CHANGE? WE WILL ADDRESS THESE QUESTIONS USING LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS THAT SIMULATE BIODIVERSITY LOSSES AND REALISTIC ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES, USING SOME NOVEL TECHNIQUES IN THIS CONTEXT THAT ALLOW US TO INVESTIGATE THAT BIOLOGICAL MECHANISMS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE EFFECTS OF BIODIVERSITY ON THE DECOMPOSITION OF ORGANIC MATTER.
