EL CRECIMIENTO ES UN CARACTER BIOLOGICO DETERMINANTE DE LA PRODUCTIVIDAD DE LOS SISTEMAS DE CULTIVO DE BIVALVOS MARINOS. LA FINALIDAD DEL PRESENTE PROYECTO ES ESTUDIAR LOS PROCESOS FISIOLOGICOS IMPLICADOS EN LA DETERMINACION ENDOGENA DEL CRECIMIENTO EN ESTE GRUPO DE ORGANISMOS, Y SUS BASES GENETICAS. PARA ESTE OBJETIVO SE COORDINAN DOS GRUPOS DE INVESTIGACION CON UN HISTORIAL CONTRASTADO DE ESTUDIO DE LA FISIOLOGIA Y LA GENETICA DEL CRECIMIENTO EN LOS BIVALVOS, CON EL OBJETIVO COMUN DE ABORDAR EL ESTUDIO COMPARADO DE DOS ESPECIES DE ALMEJAS DE INTERES COMERCIAL, QUE PERMITA EL ANALISIS INTEGRADO DE LOS ASPECTOS FISIOLOGICOS Y GENETICOS, Y A PARTIR DE AHI SENTAR LAS BASES PARA GENERAR HERRAMIENTAS BIOTECNOLOGICAS APLICABLES EN ACUICULTURA. DURANTE EL DESARROLLO DE UN PROYECTO ANTERIOR QUE FINALIZA A FINALES DE ESTE AÑO, SE HA AVANZADO EN LA CARACTERIZACION FISIOLOGICA Y GENETICA DE LINEAS DIFERENCIADAS DE ALMEJA JAPONICA (RUDITAPES PHILIPPINARUM), LA PRINCIPAL ESPECIE DE ALMEJA CULTIVADA. EN ESTE PROYECTO SE PRETENDE CUBRIR EL VACIO EXISTENTE EN LO QUE AL POTENCIAL DE CRECIMIENTO DE LINEAS DIFERENCIADAS DE ALMEJA FINA (TAPES DECUSSATUS) SE REFIERE, TRATANDOSE ESTA DE UNA ESPECIE QUE SI BIEN, SE PRODUCE EN CANTIDADES DISCRETAS, POSEE UN VALOR COMERCIAL MUY SUPERIOR A LA DE LA ALMEJA JAPONESA. ADICIONALMENTE, SE REALIZARA UNA VALORACION DE LOS POTENCIALES BENEFICIOS EN TASA DE CRECIMIENTO QUE PUDIERAN DERIVARSE DEL "VIGOR HIBRIDO" DE INDIVIDUOS RESULTANTES DE CRUCES CONTROLADOS ENTRE PARENTALES PERTENECIENTES A DOS RAZAS GENETICAS DE ALMEJA FINA, LA RAZA ATLANTICA Y LA RAZA MEDITERRANEA RESPECTIVAMENTE. FINALMENTE, SE ABORDARA EXPERIMENTALMENTE, Y EN CONDICIONES EN LAS QUE SE VARIEN DE MANERA CONTROLADA LOS FACTORES AMBIENTALES TEMPERATURA Y RACION, LA COMPARACION DE LAS TASAS DE CRECIMIENTO DE INDIVIDUOS DE ALMEJA FINA Y DE ALMEJA JAPONESA PERTENECIENTES A GRUPOS DE CRECIMIENTO DIFERENCIADOS,_x000D_ LOS OBJETIVOS PROPUESTOS INCLUYEN:_x000D_ -IDENTIFICAR LOS FACTORES GENETICOS RESPONSABLES DE DIFERENCIAS EN TASA DE CRECIMIENTO MEDIANTE ESTUDIOS DE EXPRESION GENICA DIFERENCIAL Y LIGAMIENTO (QTLS)_x000D_ -DETERMINAR LOS PARAMETROS FISIOLOGICOS Y RASGOS MORFO-FUNCIONALES QUE EXPLICAN LAS DIFERENCIAS EN TASA DE CRECIMIENTO ENTRE RAZAS Y FAMILIAS DE CADA ESPECIE Y ENTRE ESPECIES DE ALMEJAS_x000D_ -ESTABLECER LA CORRESPONDENCIA ENTRE FACTORES GENETICOS Y COMPONENTES FISIOLOGICOS DEL CRECIMIENTO._x000D_ PARA ALCANZAR ESTOS OBJETIVOS SE UTILIZARAN HERRAMIENTAS DE FISIOLOGIA ENERGETICA (MEDIDAS DE PARAMETROS FISIOLOGICOS QUE INTEGRAN LA ECUACION DEL BALANCE ENERGETICO -SCOPE FOR GROWTH-), SE REALIZARAN MEDIDAS DE DEL TAMAÑO DE LOS ORGANOS MAS RELEVANTES (BRANQUIA Y GLANDULA DIGESTIVA), Y SE UTILIZARAN HERRAMIENTAS DE TRANSCRIPTOMICA (MICROARRAYAS, RNA-SEQ, PCR CUANTITATIVO) PARA DETERMINAR LOS GENES Y/O REDES METABOLICAS ASOCIADAS A LAS DIFERENCIAS DE CRECIMIENTO EN LOS GRUPOS SEGREGADOS DE CRECIMIENTO. SE BUSCARAN POLIMORFISMOS EN LOS GENOMAS DE FAMILIAS DE ALMEJA MEDIANTE TECNICAS GBS PARA DETECTAR QTL ASOCIADOS AL CRECIMIENTO Y A LOS PARAMETROS FISIOLOGICOS QUE LO CONDICIONAN. (Spanish)

GROWTH IS A KEY BIOLOGICAL CHARACTER FOR THE PRODUCTIVITY OF FARMING SYSTEMS OF MARINE BIVALVES . THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO STUDY THE PHYSIOLOGICAL PROCESSES INVOLVED IN THE ENDOGENOUS DETERMINATION OF GROWTH IN THIS GROUP OF ORGANISMS, AND THEIR GENETIC BASES. FOR THIS PURPOSE TWO RESEARCH GROUPS WITH A PROVEN TRACK RECORD ON STUDY OF THE PHYSIOLOGY AND GENETICS OF BIVALVE GROWTH WILL COORDINATE THEIR ACTIVITIES, WITH THE COMMON GOAL OF DEVELOPING A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF TWO CLAM SPECIES WITH COMMERCIAL VALUE, INTEGRATING PHYSIOLOGICAL AND GENETIC PERSPECTIVES, WHICH MIGHT LEAD TO SET THE GROUND TO GENERATE BIOTECHNOLOGY TOOLS WITH APPLICATION IN AQUACULTURE. DURING THE COUSE OF A PREVIOUS RESERACH PROJECT WHICH IS CLOSE TO END IN DECEMBER 2017, WE HAVE PROGRESSED IN THE PHYSIOLOGICAL AND GENETIC CHARACTERIZATON OF FAMILY LINES OF THE MANILA CLAM (RUDITAPES PHYLIPPINARUM), THE MOST SUCCESSFULLY CULTIVATED CLAM SPECIES. WITH THIS NEW PROJECT PROPOSAL WE AIM TO GIVE THE FIRST STEPS INTO THE STUDY OF THE GROWTH POTENTIAL THAT SELECTED FAMILY LINES OF THE CARPET SHELL CLAM (RUDITAPES DECUSSATUS) MAY SHOW, SINCE AS FAR AS WE KNOW THERE IS NO INFORMATION ABOUT THIS TOPIC. THE PRODUCTION NUMBERS OF THE CARPET SHELL CLAM ARE FAR FROM THOSE OF THE MANILA CLAM, BUT ITS COMMERCIAL RELATIVE VALUE IS MUCH MORE HIGHER. A DEEPER APPROACH IS ALSO PROPOSED WHEN STUDYING THE CARPET SHELL CLAM GROWTH, SINCE WE AIM TO ANALIZE THE GROWTH POTENTIAL OF TWO GENETIC RACES OF R. DECUSSATUS , NAMELYTHE ATLANTIC AND THE WEST MEDITERRANEAN RACES BUT ALSO THE GROWTH POTENTIAL OF THE HYBRIDS THAT MAY DERIVE FROM THEIR CROSS. FINALLY, WE HAVE DESIGNED AND EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH TO DIRECTLY COMPARE THE GROWTH PERFORMANCE OF FAST AND SLOW GROWING INDIVIDUALS OF THE TWO CLAM SPECIES,( THE CARPET SHELL AND THE MANILA CLAM) UNDER CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS WHERE WE WILL STUDY THE RESPONSES WHEN CHANGING THE TWO MAIN FACTORS AFFECTING THE GROWTH RATE : RATION AND TEMPERATURE, RESPECTIVELY._x000D_ THE PROPOSED OBJECTIVES INCLUDE:_x000D_ - TO IDENTIFY THE GENETIC FACTORS RESPONSIBLE FOR DIFFERENCES IN GROWTH RATE BY DIFFERENTIAL GENE EXPRESSION STUDIES AND LINKAGE ( QTL )_x000D_ - TO DETERMINE THE PHYSIOLOGICAL PARAMETERS AND MORPHO- FUNCTIONAL FEATURES THAT EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCES IN GROWTH RATE_x000D_ - TO ESTABLISH CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN GENETIC AND PHYSIOLOGICAL COMPONENTS OF GROWTH ._x000D_ TO ACHIEVE THESE GOALS, ENERGETIC PHYSIOLOGY TOOLS (MEASURES OF PHYSIOLOGICAL PARAMETERS THAT INTEGRATE THE EQUATION OF ENERGY BALANCE -SCOPE FOR GROWTH- ) WILL BE USED; THE SIZE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ORGANS ( GILL AND DIGESTIVE GLAND ) WILL BE MEASURED; AND TRANSCRIPTOMIC TOOLS (MICROARRAYS, RNA- SEQ, QUANTITATIVE PCR) WILL BE USED TO IDENTIFY GENES AND / OR METABOLIC NETWORKS ASSOCIATED WITH GROWTH DIFFERENCES IN THE SEGREGATED GROWTH GROUPS. POLYMORPHISMS WILL BE SEARCHED IN THE CLAM GENOME BY USING GBS MARKERS IN CLAM FAMILIES, WITH THE AIM OF MAKING LINKAGE MAPS AND DETECTING QTL ASSOCIATED WITH GROWTH AND GROWTH-RELATED PHYSIOLOGICAL PARAMETERS.
