THEIR CONCENTRATIONS IN ENVIRONMENTAL SAMPLES ARE GENERALLY LOW, SO THEY DO NOT CAUSE IMMEDIATE EFFECTS ON ORGANISMS, BUT A PROLONGED EXPOSURE CAN PRODUCE CHRONIC EFFECTS ON THE SAME OR MORE SUBTLE EFFECTS SUCH AS METABOLIC OR REPRODUCTIVE CHANGES IN DIFFERENT SPECIES.
