THE MOST INTENSIVE PRODUCTION SYSTEMS ARE CRITICISED IN RELATION TO ANIMAL WELFARE. THE LEVEL OF CONCERN FOR ANIMAL WELFARE AMONG EUROPEAN CITIZENS IS INCREASING AND THEY REQUIRE REGULATIONS TO REGULATE THESE SYSTEMS. THE PRODUCTION RABBIT IS HOUSED IN CONVENTIONAL CAGES OF SMALL SIZE AND VERY POOR ENVIRONMENT, AND ALL INDICATIONS SUGGEST THAT IN THE MEDIUM TERM THE RABBIT MEAT PRODUCTION SYSTEM WILL BE SUBJECT TO REGULATIONS AIMED AT IMPROVING ANIMAL WELFARE. EU SCIENTIFIC REPORTS CALL FOR MORE SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION ON POSSIBLE IMPROVEMENTS IN HOUSING FOR BREEDING AND BAIT RABBITS, AND THEIR EFFECT ON ANIMAL WELFARE AND PRODUCTION. EXPLICIT REFERENCE IS MADE TO THE ENRICHED ENVIRONMENT CAGES AND THE PROVISION OF MATERIALS HANDLEABLE. ALL OF THEM TO COMPLY WITH THE FIVE FREEDOMS, IN PARTICULAR THE ONE RELATED TO THE POSSIBILITY OF EXPRESSING THE NATURAL BEHAVIORS OF THE SPECIES, SUCH AS THE BEHAVIORS OF MAINTENANCE, SOCIAL BEHAVIOR, NESTING, REST, GROOMING, EXPLORATION, THERMOREGULATION, PLAY, LOCOMOTION, GNAWING AND DOING COPROPHAGIA. ALL OF WHICH WOULD HAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE REDUCTION OF RABBITs’ DISTRESSES. THE GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO GENERATE KNOWLEDGE THAT WILL HELP SPANISH BREEDERS TO ADDRESS THE ANIMAL WELFARE CHALLENGES OF THEIR FARMS SO THAT THEY ARE EVEN MORE COMPETITIVE THAN AT PRESENT. THIS WILL POSITION THEM BETTER TO COMPLY WITH FUTURE REGULATIONS THAT WILL REQUIRE MODIFICATIONS OF ACCOMMODATION AND MANAGEMENT. THE CHALLENGES THEY FACE ARE: 1. DEVELOP ENRICHED ENVIRONMENT CAGES FOR BOTH BREEDING AND BAIT GAZAPOS; 2. THE PROVISION OF MATERIALS SUITABLE FOR CAGED RABBITS; 3. THE PROVISION OF MORE VARIED DIETS WITH A CERTAIN PROPORTION OF FOOD CLOSER TO THE NATURAL OF THE SPECIES AND 4. THE DEVELOPMENT OF ALTERNATIVE PRODUCTION SYSTEMS FREE OF SMALL-SCALE CAGES. THIS LAST ASPECT MAY BE OF INTEREST IN SLOW FOOD PRODUCTION BUT ALSO IN SPAIN’S COOPERATION PROGRAMMES IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES. A LAST CHALLENGE IS THE ACCOMMODATION OF GROUP BREEDERS DURING PART OF THEIR PRODUCTIVE CYCLE WITH OR WITHOUT EARLY SOCIALISATION GAZAPOS. THESE CHALLENGES ARE DIRECTLY CORRELATED WITH THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT, WHICH ARE: 1. TEST AND FINE-TUNE ENRICHED AMBIENCE ACCOMMODATION FOR BREEDERS; 2. STUDY MATERIALS FOR BREEDERS IN INDIVIDUAL CAGES; 3. TEST AND FINE-TUNE ACCOMMODATION OF ENRICHED ENVIRONMENT BAIT GAZAPOS; 4. STUDY MATERIALS (FOOD-ASSOCIATED) FOR BAIT GAZAPOS; 5. DEVELOP MORE VARIED DIETS USING A CERTAIN PROPORTION OF FOODS CLOSER TO THE NATURAL OF THE SPECIES USING AGRICULTURAL BY-PRODUCTS OF ARAGON; 6. TEST AND DEVELOP A SYSTEM OF EARLY SOCIALISATION OF GAZAPOS TO REDUCE STRESS BY SOCIAL MIXING DURING BAIT; AND 7. TEST AND DEVELOP ALTERNATIVE PRODUCTION SYSTEMS FREE OF SMALL SCALE CAGES ORIENTED TO AN ECOLOGICAL PRODUCTION WITH GROUP ACCOMMODATION. THE USE OF ENRICHED CAGES AND THE PROVISION OF MATERIAL DO THEY ALLOW TO SATISFY THESE BASIC BEHAVIORS WITH POSITIVE EFFECTS ON ANIMAL WELFARE AND PRODUCTIVITY, OFFERING CONSUMERS A PRODUCT OF HIGHER QUALITY AND SAFETY. LOS SISTEMAS DE PRODUCCION MAS INTENSIVOS SON OBJETO DE CRITICA EN RELACION CON EL BIENESTAR ANIMAL. EL NIVEL DE PREOCUPACION POR EL BIENESTAR ANIMAL POR PARTE DE LOS CIUDADANOS EUROPEOS ES CRECIENTE Y EXIGEN NORMATIVAS QUE REGULEN ESTOS SISTEMAS. EL CONEJO DE PRODUCCION SE ALOJA EN JAULAS CONVENCIONALES DE REDUCIDAS DIMENSIONES Y AMBIENTE MUY POBRE, Y TODOS LOS INDICIOS SUGIEREN QUE A MEDIO PLAZO EL SISTEMA DE PRODUCCION DE CARNE DE CONEJO SERA OBJETO DE NORMATIVAS ORIENTADAS A MEJORAR EL BIENESTAR ANIMAL. LOS INFORMES CIENTIFICOS DE LA UE RECLAMAN MAS INFORMACION CIENTIFICA SOBRE POSIBLES MEJORAS EN LOS ALOJAMIENTOS PARA CONEJOS REPRODUCTORES Y DE CEBO, Y SU EFECTO SOBRE EL BIENESTAR ANIMAL Y LA PRODUCCION. SE HACE REFERENCIA EXPLICITA A LAS JAULAS DE AMBIENTE ENRIQUECIDO Y A LA PROVISION DE MATERIALES ¿MANIPULABLES¿. TODO ELLOS PARA DAR CUMPLIMIENTO A LAS CINCO LIBERTADES, EN ESPECIAL LA REFERIDA A AQUELLA REFERIDA A LA POSIBILIDAD DE EXPRESAR LOS COMPORTAMIENTOS NATURALES DE LA ESPECIE, TALES COMO LAS CONDUCTAS DE MANTENIMIENTO, DE COMPORTAMIENTO SOCIAL, DE NIDIFICACION, DESCANSO, ACICALAMIENTO, EXPLORACION, TERMORREGULACION, JUEGO, LOCOMOCION, ROER Y HACER COPROFAGIA. TODO LO CUAL REPERCUTIRA POSITIVAMENTE EN LA REDUCCION DEL DISTRES DE LOS CONEJOS. EL OBJETIVO GENERAL DE ESTE PROYECTO ES GENERAR CONOCIMIENTOS QUE AYUDEN A LOS CUNICULTORES ESPAÑOLES A HACER FRENTE A LOS RETOS RELACIONADOS CON EL BIENESTAR ANIMAL DE SUS EXPLOTACIONES DE FORMA QUE SEAN AUN MAS COMPETITIVAS QUE EN LA ACTUALIDAD. ELLO LOS POSICIONARA MEJOR PARA DAR CUMPLIMIENTO A LAS FUTURAS NORMATIVAS QUE EXIGIRAN MODIFICACIONES DE ALOJAMIENTOS Y MANEJO. LOS RETOS A LOS QUE SE ENFRENTAN SON: 1. DESARROLLAR JAULAS DE AMBIENTE ENRIQUECIDO TANTO PARA REPRODUCTORES COMO PARA GAZAPOS EN CEBO; 2. LA PROVISION DE MATERIALES ¿MANIPULABLES¿ ADECUADOS A LOS CONEJOS ALOJADOS EN JAULAS; 3. LA PROVISION DE DIETAS MAS VARIADAS CON CIERTA PROPORCION DE ALIMENTOS MAS CERCANOS A LO NATURAL DE LA ESPECIE Y 4. EL DESARROLLO DE SISTEMAS DE PRODUCCION ALTERNATIVOS EXENTOS DE JAULAS A PEQUEÑA ESCALA. ESTE ULTIMO ASPECTO PUEDE SER DE INTERES EN LA PRODUCCION SLOW FOOD PERO TAMBIEN EN LOS PROGRAMAS DE COOPERACION DE ESPAÑA EN PAISES EN DESARROLLO. UN ULTIMO RETO ES EL ALOJAMIENTO DE REPRODUCTORAS EN GRUPO DURANTE PARTE DE SU CICLO PRODUCTIVO CON O SIN SOCIALIZACION TEMPRANA GAZAPOS. ESTOS RETOS SE CORRELACIONAN DIRECTAMENTE CON LOS OBJETIVOS DEL PROYECTO QUE SON: 1. PROBAR Y PONER A PUNTO ALOJAMIENTOS DE AMBIENTE ENRIQUECIDO PARA REPRODUCTORES; 2. ESTUDIAR MATERIALES ¿MANIPULABLES¿ PARA REPRODUCTORAS EN JAULA INDIVIDUAL; 3. PROBAR Y PONER A PUNTO ALOJAMIENTOS DE AMBIENTE ENRIQUECIDO GAZAPOS DE CEBO; 4. ESTUDIAR MATERIALES ¿MANIPULABLES¿(ALIMENTO-ASOCIADOS) PARA GAZAPOS DE CEBO; 5. DESARROLLAR DIETAS MAS VARIADAS UTILIZANDO CIERTA PROPORCION DE ALIMENTOS MAS CERCANOS AL NATURAL DE LA POR ESPECIE UTILIZANDO SUBPRODUCTOS AGRICOLAS DE ARAGON; 6. PROBAR Y PONER A PUNTO UN SISTEMA DE SOCIALIZACION TEMPRANA DE LOS GAZAPOS PARA REDUCIR EL ESTRES POR MEZCLA SOCIAL DURANTE EL CEBO; Y 7. PROBAR Y PONER A PUNTO SISTEMAS DE PRODUCCION ALTERNATIVOS EXENTOS DE JAULAS A PEQUEÑA ESCALA ORIENTADOS A UNA PRODUCCION ECOLOGICA CON ALOJAMIENTO EN GRUPO. EL USO DE JAULAS ENRIQUECIDAS Y LA PROVISION DE MATERIAL ¿MANIPULABLE¿ PERMITIRAN SATISFACER ESTAS CONDUCTAS BASICAS CON EFECTOS POSITIVOS SOBRE EL BIENESTAR ANIMAL Y LA PRODUCTIVIDAD, OFRECIENDO A LOS CONSUMIDORES UN PRODUCTO DE MAS CALIDAD Y SEGURIDAD.
