Although archaeological evidence has clarified the period during which the island of Cyprus was first inhabited, there is still considerable uncertainty about the place of origin of these inhabitants, as well as the possible sea routes followed for their arrival on the island. Based on similarities of recorded material (e.g., architecture, stone technology, fauna), the regions of Anatolia and the Near East have at times been proposed as regions of origin of the first inhabitants of Cyprus. With the aim of supporting archaeological research and interpretation on prehistoric movements to and from Cyprus, this project aims to model, through simulation algorithms, involuntary (in current) and voluntary (to-go) sea travel, based on data and assumptions regarding the prevailing environmental conditions and the characteristics of waterways. The above approach will be implemented to outline possible maritime routes, to assess the degree of interconnection between coastal positions in Cyprus and positions of the neighbouring continental coastline, as well as to identify areas on both coastlines (Cyprus-Asias) from where sailing and/or approach would be more favourable. The results of the simulations, in combination with the archaeological data, are expected to support responses about the origin of the first inhabitants of Cyprus, the technological and possibly cognitive skills associated with successful sea travel, as well as emerging preferred sea routes. Therefore, this programme aims, through cross-sectoral research and scientific excellence, to enlighten and promote aspects of Cyprus’ prehistoric cultural heritage, with particular emphasis on its maritime component, while strengthening cooperation between Cypriot and foreign (Israeli) academic and research institutions.     Παρότι αρχαιολογικά τεκμήρια έχουν αποσαφηνίσει τη χρονική περίοδο κατά την οποία το νησί της Κύπρου πρωτοκατοικήθηκε, υπάρχει ακόμη σημαντική αβεβαιότητα σχετικά με τον τόπο προέλευσης των κατοίκων αυτών, καθώς και των πιθανών θαλάσσιων διαδρομών που ακολουθήθηκαν για την άφιξή τους στο νησί. Βάσει ομοιοτήτων καταγεγραμμένου υλικού (π.χ., αρχιτεκτονική, λίθινη τεχνολογία, πανίδα), οι περιοχές της Ανατολίας και της Εγγύς Ανατολής έχουν κατά καιρούς προταθεί ως περιοχές προέλευσης των πρώτων κατοίκων της Κύπρου. Έχοντας ως στόχο την υποστήριξη της αρχαιολογικής έρευνας και ερμηνείας σχετικά με τις προϊστορικές μετακινήσεις από και προς την Κύπρο, το παρόν πρόγραμμα αποσκοπεί στη μοντελοποίηση, μέσω αλγορίθμων προσομοίωσης, ακούσιων (σε ρεύμα) και εκούσιων (με προορισμό) θαλάσσιων μετακινήσεων, βάσει δεδομένων και υποθέσεων αναφορικά με τις επικρατούσες περιβαλλοντικές συνθήκες και τα χαρακτηριστικά των πλωτών μέσων. Η παραπάνω προσέγγιση θα εφαρμοστεί για να σκιαγραφήσει πιθανές θαλάσσιες διαδρομές, να εκτιμήσει το βαθμό διασύνδεσης ανάμεσα σε παράλιες θέσεις της Κύπρου και θέσεις της γειτονικής ηπειρωτικής ακτογραμμής, καθώς και για να εντοπίσει περιοχές σε αμφότερες τις ακτογραμμές (Κύπρου-Ασίας) από όπου ο απόπλους ή/και η προσέγγιση θα ήταν ευνοϊκότερα. Τα αποτελέσματα των προσομοιώσεων, σε συνδυασμό με τα αρχαιολογικά δεδομένα, αναμένεται να υποστηρίξουν απαντήσεις σχετικά με την προέλευση των πρώτων κατοίκων της Κύπρου, τις τεχνολογικές και πιθανώς γνωστικές ικανότητες που σχετίζονται με επιτυχημένες θαλάσσιες μετακινήσεις, καθώς και τις αναδυόμενες προτιμητέες θαλάσσιες διαδρομές. Ως εκ τούτου, το παρόν πρόγραμμα αποσκοπεί, μέσω της διατομεακής έρευνας και της επιστημονικής αριστείας, στη διαφώτιση και προώθηση πτυχών της προϊστορικής πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς της Κύπρου, με ιδιαίτερη έμφαση στη θαλάσσια συνιστώσα της, ενδυναμώνοντας παράλληλα τη συνεργασία μεταξύ Κυπριακών και ξένων (Ισραηλινών) ακαδημαϊκών και ερευνητικών ιδρυμάτων.
