Projekt Archipelag cyfrowy - Nowa biblioteka w Rudzie Śląskiej, polega na przeprowadzeniu kompleksowych działań mających na celu unowocześnienie pracy biblioteki i dostosowania jej działalności do standardów europejskich. W ramach projektu zostanie uruchomiona wirtualna wypożyczalnia zasobów bibliotecznych w 12 filiach w Rudzie Śląskiej. Ponadto zostaną zautomatyzowane procesy wewnątrzbiblioteczne poprzez uzupełnienie systemu PROLIB o kluczowe moduły. Biblioteka rozpocznie również proces digitalizacji zasobów kulturalnych, archiwizowania ich i udostępniania w formie cyfrowej zainteresowanym użytkownikom. Zachowana zostanie przy tym procesie zasada „Dobrych praktyk”–nie powielanie tego, co już jest poddane digitalizacji i upublicznione w sieci. Dodatkowo, w ramach digitalizacji zaplanowano wprowadzenie streamingu utworów audiowizualnych-uzupełnienie działań leżących w sferze informacyjnej i edukacyjnej biblioteki poprzez utworzenie bazy lokalnych działań artystycznych i społecznych.
