The subject of the project called “Near Oneself” will be to strengthen or restore social competences, resourcefulness, independence and social activity of foster care pupils and their carers experiencing difficulties in fulfilling their care and educational functions. The family is the most important element of the child’s social ties. The members of the child’s family form their immediate surroundings and are the most significant in the first years, and are therefore of great importance to the child’s life and development. The family meets the child’s basic needs: biological, psychological, security, belonging, love and recognition. Not all these families perform to such an extent that children have created optimal conditions for personal development. In foster families, problems also arise and are mainly due to: — disagreement between older people and children (especially growing children), so-called generation conflict, – conflict between the foster family and the child’s biological family, which results in a negative behaviour of the child towards foster parents, – the fact that foster families are also single-parents, – lack of qualifications of foster families, especially in relation to children who have been placed in a foster family due to alcoholism or violence in the family and therefore require special care. The problems of foster families and their patients are gender-dependent, contribute to the social exclusion of this category of persons and have a negative impact on the image of foster care. This results in a permanent deficit of candidates for family foster care. Therefore, comprehensive support and reinforcement of foster families is needed, which will indirectly improve the image of foster parenthood as optimal for children who cannot be raised in biological families.
