Faced with the demise of the textile industries in the region in the wake of competition from emerging countries, the Hauts de France region and Belgium are pooling their know-how and innovation to develop technical textiles with high added value. In this context, the PHOTOTEX project aims to develop a new type of intelligent textiles that will improve thermal comfort by dynamically regulating the space between the skin and the textile. These innovative garments are capable of delivering infrared radiation to the body in line with the conditions of use: temperature (body or external) and humidity (perspiration). To achieve this objective, PHOTOTEX is inspired by photonic structures, nanostructures that interact with light according to their wavelength (i.e. their colour). PHOTOTEX generates similar structures adapted to infrared “light” using methods compatible with the textile industry, combining several original approaches. The design and shaping of these textiles, as well as the evaluation of their performance, require a multidisciplinary approach involving specialists, on whose input PHOTOTEX draws in the form of a cross-border consortium.
