This project intends to take on the challenge of developing innovative integrated governance models for the natural and cultural sites of the cooperation area. It aims to create a sustainable cross-border management system for more effective public initiatives to protect and promote the ecosystem heritage of lakes, lagoons and ponds. The Municipality of Alghero will develop a joint action plan in coordination with the Municipalities of Massarosa and Orbetello, CIRSPE, Lucca Province, the Department of Upper Corsica, IFREMER and the Department of Var. This plan will integrate the management and promote the ecosystem of cross-border lagoons, lakes and ponds, and related itineraries. Pilot actions will implement the plan on the natural and cultural sites of Calich, Massaciuccoli, Orbetello, Biguglia, the Ancient Salt Pans of Pesquiers and Villepey. The plan includes an experimentation and capitalisation action on the Serchio river area. The joint action plan will be based on the pre-existing wetland management models, under national regulations, and envisages a path of shared development and joint implementation with the partners sharing their experiences and knowledge for the creation of a cross-border management model. The integrated and cross-border management of the natural and cultural heritage of the lagoons, lakes and ponds will start when all the partners have acquired the necessary knowledge and shared the basic know-how. RETRALAGS is part of the Blueprint policy framework, 2000/60/EC Framework Directive objectives and COM/2012/0670 report results and is the ideal continuation of the cross-border projects ZOUMATE, ZOUMGEST, RETRAPARC, MONIQUA, AISC, SICOMAR and MOMAR as well as the transnational project WATER IN CORE.
