The historical, cultural and natural route around the Tatras is a joint PL-SK brand tourism product, which assumes the implementation of over 250 km long loop around the Tatra Mountains with ski, bicycle and cross-country trails. The route leads through the historical and cultural lands of Podhale, Orava, Liptov and Spiš. During the first stage of the project implementation, in the period 2014–2015, over 93 km of cycling paths were constructed. Stage II of cycling paths and cycling infrastructure construction along the route around the Tatras will be continued by 10 partners from PL and SK as part of the present project. The project involves the creation of further 59.44 km of cycling paths, together with a car park and shelters for cyclists. On the Polish side, the route will lead east from the town of Nowy Targ through the municipalities of Szaflary, Nowy Targ and Łapsze Niżne, up to the Kacwin-Wielka Frankowa border crossing point. On the Slovak side, partners will continue building cycling routes from the locality of Zdziar towards Tatrzańska Kotlina and Spišská Belá, and further on to Kežmarok. Moreover, the route will be extended in Slovakia, in Liptovský Mikuláš and Trstená, and a stretch between Hniezdne and Stará Ľubovňa will be created. The impact of the investment part of the project on a significant part of the support area on both sides of the border will be strengthened by cooperation measures focused on the development of cycling tourism in the PL-SK border area and integrated promotional activities presenting a new tourism product of the border area – the Route around the Tatras – with its most valuable qualities. As a result, the local population and tourists will be offered a cross-border product enabling them to safely travel by bike in the borderland and at the same time to discover historically, culturally and environmentally valuable places that have been inaccessible so far. It will significantly increase the attractiveness of the borderland and provide a response to the current needs related to the development of alternative, environmentally-sound forms of travelling and family recreation.
