The corona crisis made the vulnerability of global production chains visible, but at the same time it showed the importance of local production capacity. The transition to a bio-circular economy that uses local, sustainable raw materials and creates new, local jobs can make a significant contribution to this. The construction sector in particular benefits from this: ecological construction with new materials (such as bio composites) by means of energy-efficient technologies can make a major contribution to climate goals while stimulating the local economy. To support this transition, there is a great need for the development of broader competencies. The Interreg project Borderless Biobased Education (GBO) showed that the relevant knowledge of current employees in this industry is still insufficient to fully utilize the growth potential of the region. The companies in the region will need at least 1,000 highly educated people in the coming years to realize the transition. However, only about 400 come from relevant courses. According to the analysis, there is a need for personnel that is specifically trained, both in the technical and in the business area. 21st century skills such as leadership, teamwork and communication skills are demanded by companies of all sizes. To develop the above-mentioned competencies, specific training courses are required that are offered flexibly. The combination of online and face-to-face education is essential to stimulate collaborative learning and social skills. The Avans Foundation and four other educational institutions will test interactive components of teaching modules at HBO bachelor's level in pilots, focusing on collaboration between university students and professionals active in the construction sector.
